Ten Smuin Dancers to Showcase Own Choreography, 2/21-22

Admired for their versatility on stage, ten Smuin Ballet dancers will be taking off their dance shoes and inviting audiences to experience their talents as choreographers and more in XXPERIMENTS - Choreography Showcase. In an inventive evening of original works, Smuin dancers Darrin Anderson, Erica Chipp, Aidan DeYoung, Jonathan Dummar, Nicole Haskins, Weston Krukow, Ben Needham-Wood, Jane Rehm, Susan Roemer, and Christian Squires will showcase their own choreography set on fellow company members. Original works are set to a wide range of music and also feature lighting and costumes designed by the dancer-choreographers. Smuin Ballet's 4th Choreography Showcase, including a Q&A after the show, will be presented 7:30pm February 21, and 2pm & 7:30pm February 22 at ODC Theater, 3153 17th St., San Francisco. Smuin Ballet to Celebrate 20th Anniversary with XXtravaganza Gala, 3/1

Celebrating its rich history of quality and innovation in choreography, Smuin Ballet celebrates its 20th Anniversary with a dynamic 2014 XXRAVAGANZA GALA, to be held Saturday, March 1, 2014. Honorary Chairs Elaine and Tony La Russa are joined by Event Co-chairs Patti and Jerry Hume, Athena and John Konstin, and celebrity guest auctioneers, former San Francisco Mayor Willie L. Brown and 'Voice of the Giants' Renel Brooks-Moon, to create an exhilarating tribute to Smuin Ballet, featuring highlights from the past 20 years as well as glimpses of this season's brilliant lineup. Senator Mark Leno will open the festivities with a special presentation from the State Senate in honor of Smuin Ballet and its 20 years of creative and artistic excellence. The black tie event will include a cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by a delectable dinner catered by McCall's, live auction, and performance by Smuin Ballet's acclaimed dancers. Smuin Ballet Presents a Holiday Celebrations with XXmas: The Christmas Ballet

The Bay Area's hottest holiday ticket gets a 20th Anniversary Season kick with XXmas: The Christmas Ballet, 2013 Edition, making its sassy return with a perfect gift for audience members of all ages. An ever-changing carousel of mischief and elegance, this enormously popular holiday celebration offers something for everyone, from ballet, tap, and swing to a wealth of other dances drawn from holiday traditions from around the world. This year XXmas: The Christmas Ballet will include new choreography from Smuin's acclaimed Choreographer-in-Residence Amy Seiwert and Post:Ballet Artistic Director Robert Dekkers. XXmas: The Christmas Ballet will tour the Bay Area, beginning with shows in Walnut Creek (November 22-23), continuing in Livermore (November 29-30), Carmel (December 6-7), and Mountain View (December 11-15), and finishing up with its annual holiday run at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (December 18-28). Smuin Ballet Kicks Off 20th Anniversary Season with Montana Tour Today

To kick off its 20th Anniversary Season, Smuin Ballet will head to Montana, the home state of late founder Michael Smuin, to present a tour that includes Smuin's much-loved Sinatra ballet Fly Me to the Moon, as well as the acclaimed Dear Miss Cline from company Choreographer-in-Residence Amy Seiwert and Jazzin', a saucy and seductive work by Darrell Grand Moultrie. Smuin Ballet's Montana tour will play today and tomorrow, September 8 - 9 in Michael Smuin's hometown of Missoula at the Montana Repertory Theatre and September 13 at the Mansfield Theatre, Great Falls. Tickets are available by calling each venue's box office (see info at the end of the release). The Great Falls performance will benefit McLaughlin Research Institute for Biomedical Sciences, with which Smuin Ballet shares a close connection.

Smuin Ballet will kick off its 20th Anniversary Season October 4-12 at San Francisco's Palace of Fine Arts with its XXtremes Fall Program. The lineup features Northern California's first look at Jiri Kylian's acclaimed Return to a Strange Land, set to four heart-rending pieces for solo piano by Czech composer Leoš Janacek. Set on six dancers, the piece combines elegant classical ballet and swiftly-changing geometric poses in a meditation on loss, healing, and hope, created as a tribute to Kylian's mentor John Cranko. Smuin also brings back by popular demand the enchanting ballet Dear Miss Cline, a buoyant and colorful romp set to the music of Patsy Cline by Choreographer in Residence Amy Seiwert. Featuring ten Nashville tunes including 'Walkin' After Midnight,' 'Come On In,' 'Triangle,' 'There He Goes,' 'Pick Me Up On Your Way Down,' and more, this high spirited and sentimental hit charms audiences with a rollicking trip through Cline's country canon. The program will also include one of Michael Smuin's most lauded works, Carmina Burana. Set to Carl Orff's 1937 dramatic cantata of the same title, this iconic work from Smuin Ballet's founder sets the heart soaring with a boisterous production that celebrates life, lust, and joy - and mourns the cruelty of fate.

In addition, Bay Area audiences will get their first look at Darrell Grand Moultrie's JAZZIN', a sultry ballet set to music by Wynton Marsalis, Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Andy Razaf. The bill also includes Michael Smuin's romantic and pastoral Chants d'Auvergne. Smuin Ballet's Spring Program will play today, May 10-19 at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, May 22-26 at the Mountain View Center for the Performing Arts, May 31-June 1 at Walnut Creek's Lesher Center for the Arts, and June 7-8 at Carmel's Sunset Center.
