Smuin Kicks Off 25th Anniversary With Trey McIntyre's Etta James Ballet

Smuin launches its 25th anniversary season with Dance Series 01, a fall program that expands the boundaries of contemporary ballet, pays tribute to Smuin's founder, and celebrates the company's quarter century mark. Acclaimed dancemaker Trey McIntyre returns to Smuin with Blue Until June, a thrilling tribute to Etta James. Continuing Smuin's long-time dedication to fostering new talent within the company is a trio of groundbreaking works first developed in Smuin's Choreography Showcase: Merely Players by Smuin dancer Nicole Haskins, Echo (formerly titled Reflection) by Smuin dancer Ben Needham-Wood, and Sinfonietta by former Smuin dancer Rex Wheeler. Dance Series 01 will also include two works by founder Michael Smuin: Schubert Scherzo, an effervescent dance set to Schubert's sprightly C-Major Symphony, and Eternal Idol, a romantic pas de deux inspired by Auguste Rodin sculptures. Dance Series 01 will be presented September 21-22 at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek and September 28-October 6 at the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco. Smuin's Annual Gala Lights Up San Francisco, 3/4

San Francisco's premier contemporary American ballet company celebrates its successful and innovative 24th season at Smuin's Annual Gala, to be held Sunday, March 4, 2018 at San Francisco's Galleria. The dancers of Smuin Contemporary American Ballet will trade in their pointe shoes for heels to mingle among the city's leaders in arts and business, for a lavish evening of extraordinary entertainment.

Smuin's 2018 Choreography Showcase Highlights Works By Dancers For Dancers

Smuin dancers will step into the spotlight as choreographers during Smuin's 2018 Choreography Showcase, utilizing fellow company members to bring their original ideas to life on stage in fresh new dances. This fascinating showcase of never-before-seen pieces equal parts bold, lively, and curious will be followed by a Q&A session, during which audience members can discuss the artistic process with the dancers and choreographers. The eighth edition of Smuin's Choreography Showcase will be presented 7:30pm February 16, and 2pm February 17 at the Cowell Theater in Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture, 2 Marina Blvd, San Francisco. Ochoa is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who creates contemporary dance works and also adapts her style for classical ballet companies.

Smuin makes the holidays sizzle with its annual yuletide celebration of dance, The Christmas Ballet. With a stunning and original array of ballet, tap, and jazz, this joyous showcase of styles offers both sugar and spice, with the surprise unwrapping of new treats every year. The 2017 edition of The Christmas Ballet features three saucy world premieres one by acclaimed Choreographer-in-Residence Amy Seiwert, another created by Smuin dancer Rex Wheeler, and a debut number choreographed by dancer Erica Felsch. An exuberant holiday treat that was declared the finest toast to the season by the San Francisco Chronicle last year, The Christmas Ballet will tour the Bay Area, beginning with shows in Walnut Creek (November 17-18), continuing in Carmel (December 1-2) and Mountain View (December 6-10), and wrapping up with its annual holiday run at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco (December 14-24). Smuin kicks off its 24th season with a vibrant Dance Series 01 program, featuring the West Coast premiere of Annabelle Lopez Ochoa's transcendent piece Requiem for a Rose, which examines the differences between love and romance. Ochoa is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who both choreographs contemporary dance works and adapts her style for classical ballet companies.

MP+D Receives NEA/ART Works Grant For CAPTURED LIVE

The Museum of Performance + Design was awarded an NEA/Art Works 2017 grant to digitize, catalog, and make available online for broad public access by June 2018 dance images from the HENRIETTA MCDOWELL, CHESTER KESSLER, BOB MCLOED, and KATHERINE KAHRS photographic collections in The Elyse Eng Dance Collection at the Museum of Performance + Design. This project will preserve and provide open access to 2,500 images of dance performances in the San Francisco Bay Area from the 1940s to the 1990s, highlighting the unique holdings in the MP+D collection and the extensive and significant character of its dance photographs. MP+D is one of nine dance projects in San Francisco to be funded this year through the NEA's flagship grant program, Art Works.

Ochoa is an internationally acclaimed choreographer who both choreographs contemporary dance works and adapts her style for classical ballet companies. Also on the program is Michael Smuin's joyful tribute to Ol' Blue Eyes, Fly Me to the Moon. This blend of ballet and popular dance is the embodiment of the smooth and stylish melodies that have inspired generations, including Sinatra's renditions of "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "The Lady is a Tramp."

The Joyce Presents the Return of the Biennial BALLET FESTIVAL

Following successful, sold-out ballet festivals in 2013 and 2015, The Joyce Theater Foundation (Linda Shelton, Executive Director) is thrilled to once again present a two-week festival of ballet showcasing some of America's most exciting contemporary companies and choreographers with Joyce commissions on each program. The remarkable Ballet Festival, co-curated by Curatorial Associate John Selya, is designed to recognize dancers and choreographers who are creating work outside the traditional large company setting - and, in many cases, forming their own companies - will take place from July 18 - 29 at The Joyce Theater.

Smuin's Annual Gala Celebrates 23rd Season

Leaders in the arts and civic communities packed The Galleria for what became a sizzling evening celebrating one of the nation's most innovative and entertaining arts organizations at Smuin's Annual Gala. Co-chairs Patti and Jerry Hume, and Athena and John Konstin hosted the sparkling event, starring the Smuin dancers. The festive evening included a cocktail reception on the center's terrace, after which guests were seated on the main floor for a delectable dinner catered by McCall's with wines by Grgich Hills Estate. The Smuin dancers hit the stage, performing dazzling works created by Val Caniparoli and Michael Smuin that brought down the house. Held Sunday, March 19 at The Galleria at the San Francisco Design Center, the Gala raised more than $455,000, setting a new record for funds raised in support of Smuin's spectacular programming.
