The unfortunate case of laryngitis inflicting Death Takes A Holiday's leading man, Julian Ovenden, divided press reservations for the new musical into 'before' and 'after.'  I was originally scheduled to see the show the week of its opening, but when understudy Kevin Earley began filling in, many of us were, understandably, put on hold to wait for his return.

The talented cast of Death Takes a Holiday took to the studio on Monday, August 8, to record their original cast album with PS Classics. Jill Paice, who plays Grazia in the show, took these wonderful photos to document the wondrous occasion!

PS Classics has announced that Yeston's DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY will get cast recording release on October 11th, available for pre-order now. Kevin Earley will sing the lead role on the album, since Julian Ovenden left the show.

Death Takes a Holiday opened on July 21st at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre, with Kevin Earley in the role of 'Death.' Earley has been performing the role in the Roundabout Theatre Company show since Julian Ovenden's departure on July 19th due to laryngitis.

Writers have been personifying the concept of Death for many ages. Geoffrey Chaucer made him a wizened old man who points some riotous characters to three bushels laden with gold in the story told by The Pardoner in THE CANTERBURY TALES. The antithesis of this is the presentation of Death in Maury Yeston's beguiling new musical DEATH TAKES A HOLIDAY which is now on stage at the Roundabout's Laura Pels Theatre.

Roundabout Theatre Company opened Death Takes a Holiday last night, July 21, 2011 at the Laura Pels Theatre at the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre. As reported yesterday, leading man Julian Ovenden was unable take part in the opening because of a case of laryngitis. His understdy, Kevin Earley, stepped in to play the role of Prince Sirki/Death. Death Takes a Holiday will play a limited engagement through September 4, 2011. This production marks the second time a new musical has been presented in this theatrical space, following the recent production of The Tin Pan Alley Rag.
