BWW Review: Opulent AMADEUS Revival Fancies Up South Coast Rep Stage
by Michael L. Quintos - May 23, 2016

To close out its current season, Orange County's Tony-winning regional theater South Coast Repertory has chosen to mount an opulent, high-caliber revival of Peter Shaffer's 1979 play AMADEUS, which continues performances in Costa Mesa through June 5, 2016. The recipient of the 1981 Tony Award for Best Play, AMADEUS most notably became the basis for Milos Forman's Academy Award-winning (and, yes, arguably, much more readily known) 1984 film of the same name. For SCR's season-ender---engagingly directed by Kent Nicholson---the rather lengthy play is presented with much of the visual grandness one expects from an antiquated period piece, particularly from this particular theater company. And as an added bonus, the play is performed by a cast of incredible, seasoned actors that winningly transports its audience to a time and place centuries ago. So is it worth revisiting the tug-of-war between Salieri and Mozart? If it is South Coast Rep's visually-stunning production, then the answer is an enthusiastic 'yes.'

BWW Reviews: Travels with My Aunt is an Eclectic Offering from Colony Theatre
by Don Grigware - Nov 16, 2011

For those who like their theatre, like their literature, deliciously different, look no further than Travels with My Aunt, adapted by Giles Havergal from Graham Greene's novel, now onstage at the Colony Theatre. Packed with internationally political intrigue and perilous crime-laden adventures, ...Aunt follows Aunt Augusta (Mark Capri) as she seizes an opportunity to rescue her former bank teller, now bored florist nephew Henry (Thomas James O'Leary) from his humdrum life after the death of his mother. If it sounds akin to Auntie Mame, you're not far off track. Mame marches to the tune of her own drummer, and so does Augusta. It takes Henry longer to loosen up than Patrick in Mame, but eventually he does lose his tourist status through the journeys to Paris, Rome, Istanbul as well as to Paraguay and other places in South America. All the characters are played by four actors: the aforementioned Capri and O'Leary, as well as Larry Cedar and Sybyl Walker. A major treat in the proceedings is playfulness through transgender and also across racial lines. Meaning in simple terms that the men play women as well as men, the female actress essays male characters as well as female; a white man plays a black man and a black woman a mesh of white people. Sound interesting? It is. Yet somehow, in spite of all this fun, I found myself enjoying the play less than I thought I should. Why?

BWW Reviews: Reprise's KISS ME KATE Is Wunderbar
by Don Grigware - May 12, 2011

Cole Porter's Kiss Me Kate is a delightful musical romp that can be seen again and again. It's timeless and an overblown, yet joyous account of two egotistical actors, once married to each other, who adore one another but just cannot be around each other very long without catastrophic, calamitous results. It's also a play within a play, as Lilli Vanessi (Lesli Margherita) and Fred Graham (Tom Hewitt) are on tour essaying Katharine and Petruchio in Shakespeare's The Taming of the Shrew. Above all, the silly contrived story is overshadowed by Cole Porter's divine score with some of the most glorious tunes ever composed. Kiss Me Kate is a showcase to Porter's genius. Reprise Theatre's current revival is devastatingly hilarious with top-notch direction from Michael Michetti and a magnificent cast.

BWW Reviews: McArdle Headlines MTW's Fun 'ANNIE' Revival
by Michael L. Quintos - Nov 8, 2010

There's this old showbiz cliche that says one should never work with kids and/or animals. Well, either species probably never really scared producers from creating ANNIE, the much-beloved musical classic now in production for Musical Theatre West in Long Beach, California through November 14. Here, the kids steal every scene, and the dog... well, how can you not love a musical with a lovable (trained) dog? With famous populist origins and quite a hummable, familiar score, this long-standing musical's saccharine sweet portrayal of pre-Depression era New York City amps up the long-lost American idea of optimism. And, in a bit of inspired stunt casting, Andrea McArdle--who made her Tony-nominated debut in the original 1977 Broadway production as the title role--steps into the role of the wicked Ms. Hannigan for this production.

MTW's Annie Proves Enduring Hit
by Don Grigware - Nov 1, 2010

The phenomenally successful 1977 Broadway musical Annie took America by storm and has been filmed twice. After 33 years, and especially now during our country's long bout of economic recession, its Depression era optimism holds up better than ever, and in MTW's current glowing production everything is in place to savor.
