Next up on The Players Club of Swarthmore's Mainstage is Lisa D'Amour's (Cherokee, Nita & Zita, Airline Highway) gritty, funny, intensely emotional and cautionary play, Detroit. The play is set in a suburb of a mid-sized American city. Ben and Mary, a most dysfunctional couple invite their new neighbors, Kenny and Sharon for a cookout. The barbecue is filled with strong uneasy tension that gradually escalates into a series of out-of-control events that gives new meaning to dysfunctional behavior. Detroit was a Pulitzer Prize finalist and one of The New York Times top ten plays of 2012. Detroit is directed by George Mulford. Tickets are available online at www.pcstheater.org. RUTHLESS! THE MUSICAL originally opened Off-Broadway in 1992, created as an over-the-top dark comedy spoof of the films The Bad Seed and All About Eve, and well-known Broadway musicals Gypsy and Annie. Similar to the dark comedy in musicals such as Little Shop of Horrors and Sweeney Todd where characters are murdered and then eaten, RUTHLESS! THE MUSICAL centers on 8-year old Tina Denmark, who knows she was born to play the lead in her school's third grade show and will do anything to win the part. And I do mean anything. Now onstage at Theatre Palisades, directed by Alta Abbott who first fell in love with the show during its 1993 West Coast premiere at the Canon Theatre in Beverly Hills, I can only say that the over-the-top production sometimes seemed so dark that the comedy became invisible.

The storyline focuses on the variance of the happenings of the life of the youth that actually deepening into any of them intensively, which is a good choise. The Youth of the Group theatre enjoy being on a stage without a doubt, and so they're enjoyable to watch too!
