BWW Reviews: Under the Northern Lights of ALMOST, MAINE

Almost, Maine presents a simpler, kinder world in which sadness runs deep enough to make an impression, but in which the regret of romance lost or unrequited has the capacity to be mended by the gentle reassembly of a shattered heart.

SHREK Unseats BEAUTY AND THE BEAST as Most-Produced High School Musical in 2013-14

After six consecutive years, Disney's Beauty and the Beast has relinquished its place as the top musical in the annual survey of most-produced titles in United States high school theatres, unseated during the 2013-14 season by another adaptation of an animated anti-hero: Shrek the Musical. Returning to the list, and rounding out the top three, is Godspell, which has seen its popularity rise after a recent Broadway revival and subsequent national tour.

STAGE TUBE: Maiden High School's Canceled ALMOST, MAINE Launches Kickstarter Campaign

As previously reported, Maiden High School in Maiden, North Carolina, recently canceled its upcoming production of ALMOST, MAINE due to controversial content, specifically, a single scene, 'titled The Fell,' in which two male characters realize their feelings for one another. The Maiden High School principal made the decision to cancel the romantic comedy soon after rehearsals began, after receiving complaints from both parents and churches in the area, despite permission slips being signed. Now, Maiden's ALMOST, MAINE has launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund that effort. It has already met (and surpassed) its $1,000 goal, with 41 backers, $1,363 donated, and 13 days to go. Watch their Kickstarter video below!

BWW Reviews: GSU's ALMOST, MAINE: That Time Absurdity and Hooligans Didn't Ruin a Show

During Georgia Southern University's one-act production of John Cariani's ALMOST, MAINE, the most frequent question I asked myself was first, 'Why did those hooligans on the front row come to see this show?' and second, 'Is that a new character?' Student shows of course come with student patrons, but unruly ones have great potential to ruin a production- and these distracting young people very nearly did. And I must say that in a show full of short vignettes, concentration was vital. Thus from a 'kids these days' approach did I view this play, wishing I had brought a cane to wave in frustration.

BWW Blog: Paige Davis - Life's Dancing Lessons

I had intended this to be the blog entry I'd post immediately following the closing of Dancing Lessons, the play I just finished at Barrington Stage Company, but then the #IceBucketChallenge kind of took the spotlight on that day. Hard to top that moment! But now I can circle back.
