The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra boldly goes into the farthest reaches of space during the BNY Mellon Grand Classics weekend on October 14-16 at Heinz Hall.

The progressive New York City-based string quartet Brooklyn Rider celebrates the release of its new collaborative album with Grammy Award-winning mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter in a concert on Today, October 13 at 7:30 p.m. in Carnegie Hall's Zankel Hall. The album, So Many Things-to be released by Naive Records on September 30-features new works by the quartet's violinist and founding member Colin Jacobsen ("For 60 Cents") and by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw ("Cant voi l'aube"). Both were commissioned by Carnegie Hall for its 125 Commissions Project and will receive their New York premieres at the October 13 concert.

Music Director Joana Carneiro and Berkeley Symphony open their 2016-17 season, their eighth together, on Today, October 13 at 7 pm with the world premiere of a commission by the Orchestra of a new work by Paul Dresher, Crazy Eights & Fractured Symmetries; Stravinsky's Petrushka; and violinist Philippe Quint performing Erich Korngold's Violin Concerto at Zellerbach Hall in Berkeley.

The acclaimed Dance Theatre of Harlem (DTH) gives three performances at the Auditorium Theatre on November 18, 19, and 20 with a program that includes System, a major new work by choreographer Francesca Harper. The work is supported by the New England Foundation for the Arts, and is inspired by the current social, political, and economic climate in the United States.System was choreographed in collaboration with Dance Theatre of Harlem dancers who used their own experiences as people of color for inspiration.  DTH Artistic Director Virginia Johnson told the Washington Post that System "addresses social justice issues in the Black Lives Matter era" and is "a very contemporary piece, but also very beautiful and uplifting.' A live string quartet performs composer John Adams' original music for the piece.

Donizetti's ebullient comedy The Elixir of Love sets a celebratory tone as Houston Grand Opera's (HGO) 62nd season opener on October 21. The colorful production features tenor Dimitri Pittas and soprano Nicole Heaston, as well as the HGO debut of eminent English conductor Jane Glover. Performances run through November 4.  

The Pit Stop Players, a celebrated instrumental chamber ensemble composed of veteran Broadway pit musicians, launch their seventh season with a concert of fantasy-themed music at Good Shepherd-Faith Presbyterian Church, 152 West 66th Street, on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 7:30 PM.

Currently playing at The Georgetown Palace Theatre, 1776 THE MUSICAL, has a new concept on the popular, patriotic show that succeeds on every level. Director Clifford Butler has assembled a top notch cast with an added bonus. He chose to blind cast the roles in the musical, making fully half of the traditionally male roles, female.

Playwrights Horizons (Tim Sanford, Artistic Director; Leslie Marcus, Managing Director) has announced complete casting for RANCHO VIEJO, the world premiere of a new play by Dan LeFranc (The Big Meal at Playwrights, Sixty Miles to Silver Lake, In the Labyrinth) and directed by three-time Obie Award winner Daniel Aukin (Placebo, This at Playwrights; Fool For Love; Bad Jews; 4000 Miles; [sic]).  Commissioned by Playwrights Horizons, RANCHO VIEJO will be the third production of the theater company's 2016/2017 Season.   

October 24th from 7pm at Stage 48, 605 West 48th Street, HIV HERO will present the third annual HIV HERO Broadway & Ballet HERO Awards.

Music Director Manfred Honeck and the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra open the 2016-2017 BNY Mellon Grand Classics season with legendary violinist Pinchas Zukerman and Composer of the Year James MacMillan on October 7 and 9 at Heinz Hall.

Rubicon Theatre Company has announced the complete cast of RETURN TO THE FORBIDDEN PLANET, a fabulously campy send up of 'Forbidden Planet' and other sci-fi film and TV shows of the 1950s which melds plot elements from The Tempest with language from multiple plays by Shakespeare.
