ROCK OF AGES Producers Lead Sundance Film Noms

Sundance Institute announced today the lineup of films selected to screen in the U.S. and World Cinema Dramatic and Documentary Competitions for the 2010 Sundance Film Festival. Matt Weaver & Scott Prisand, two of ROCK OF AGES' lead producers and co-owners of the LA-based Corner Store Entertainment, have two films in the top dramatic category at Sundance Film Festival. The films, which star a host of stage stars, are SYMPATHY FOR DELICIOUS (Mark Ruffalo, Laura Linney, Orlando Bloom and Juliette Lewis) and HESHER (Natalie Portman and Joseph Gordon Levitt).

Broadway's hottest comedy, the Tony Award-winning Best Play, GOD OF CARNAGE and Oscar, Golden Globe and Emmy Award-winner Christine Lahti are featured on NY Magazine Online. The New York Philharmonic will present SONDHEIM: The Birthday Concert on March 15 and Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at 7:30 p.m. This celebration of the 80th birthday of the great Broadway and film composer/lyricist will include his most enduring orchestral music and songs - performed, in some cases, by the stars of the original Broadway cast productions - in addition to rarely-heard material. Joining the celebration will be (in alphabetical order) Michael Cerveris, Victoria Clark, Jason Danieley, Nathan Gunn, George Hearn, Patti LuPone, Marin Mazzie, Audra McDonald, Donna Murphy, Mandy Patinkin, Bernadette Peters, and others to be announced, including surprise guests. Paul Gemignani, Mr. Sondheim's longtime collaborator, will conduct the New York Philharmonic; Lonny Price is the director; and Mr. Price and Matt Cowart are the producers.

Kelly Joe Phelps who was previously scheduled to perform on 11/14, has pulled out and has been replaced PT Walkley.

And while I'm not suggesting that Yasmina Reza's God of Carnage had me longing for the subtle nuances of Messrs. Moe, Larry and Curly I will admit to being reminded of the famous Tallulah Bankhead quip, 'There's less to this than meets the eye.'

With all of the recent talk of Broadway's seeming immunity to the economic downturn as it continues to enjoy a banner season with some its highest grosses in recent history, the New York Times points out in an article today that it cannot be overlooked that the pretty numbers peppering the gross charts are due in large to a small handful of starry shows carrying most of the weight. A Steady Rain starring heavyweights Hugh Jackman and Daniel Craig, God of Carnage starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden, and Hamlet featuring Jude Law are among the shows skewing the outlook, according to the times, as their unprecedented box office revenues rival those of the monster musical hits Wicked, Jersey Boys, and Billy Elliott.

The Stella Adler Studio of Acting has announced the 60th anniversary of its founding. It is one of the oldest actor training schools in the country, founded by the legendary Stella Adler in New York City in 1949. The Tony nominated cast of Yasmina Reza's GOD OF CARNAGE have extended their contracts through November 15. The entire production took a 6 week summer hiatusto allow the cast to fulfill previously scheduled family commitments. The production, starring Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, James Gandolfini and Marcia Gay Harden will resume performances tonight, Tuesday, September 8 and continue through Sunday, November 15 with the current award winning ensemble.
