Musical Theatre Guild, the winner of the Los Angles Drama Critic's Circle Margaret Harford Award for sustained excellence in the theatre, has announced an exciting quintet of shows to celebrate its seventeenth season of Broadway in Concert musicals.

The team behind the new musical comedy NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT recently sat down to talk about the process of bringing some of George Gershwin and Ira Gershwin's most beloved standards back to Broadway for contemporary audiences. The Rudenko School of Dance presents its 44th annual performance in Santa Barbara at the Marjorie Luke Theatre, Saturday, May 26, 2012 @ 7pm. This year's production, "Totally Gershwin" will present a variety of dance performances to the music of George and Ira Gershwin. Dancers aged 4 years old to adults perform tap, jazz and ballet in a show perfect for the whole family.

Granted, most of my research can be credited to two plays by J. Dietz Osborne and Nate Eppler (known professionally as the eponymously named Osborne and Eppler, in the spirit of Rodgers and Hart, Rodgers and Hammerstein, Kaufman and Hart and George and Ira…Gershwin…which sorta ruins the sound of my sentence, but what can you do?), an impressive and noteworthy Nashville playwriting team, who seemingly have cornered the theatrical market on such Dixiefied ceremonies and celebrations in their comedies Southern Fried Funeral (which was debuted by Franklin's Bethlehem Players in 2010) and Southern Fried Nuptials (now onstage at Bethlehem Methodist Church in its world premiere production). I'll be sure to include them in the footnotes when my findings are published.

This summer, the sixth year of Movie Mondays, Segerstrom Center will screen five great films on the Arts Plaza: Billy Elliot, the coming-of-age story about an English coal miner's son who dreams of being a ballet dancer; the classic An American in Paris featuring a score by George and Ira Gershwin and starring Gene Kelly, Leslie Caron and Oscar Levant; Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas being presented in partnership with public radio station KCRW-Santa Monica (89.9 FM and www.KCRW.com); Yentl starring the incomparable Barbra Streisand and the musical comedy The Music Man with Robert Preston and Shirley Jones, which was chosen as the Audience Favorite in an on-line poll by last summer's attendees.

Noted performer and music historian, Benjamin Sears has an unprecedented familiarity with both Irving Berlin's work and the writings about him, much of which he has brought together in the new, The Irving Berlin Reader, part of the Readers on American Music Series from Oxford University Press, available in stores on April 6, 2012.

Olney Theatre Center today announced two special cabaret performances by DC- Area favorites Felicia Curry, George Dvorsky, JJ Kaczynski, Tracy Lynn Olivera and Chris Youstra called Ebony, Ivory and Ink.
