When Stephen Powell's Sweeney Todd lunges at the audience in vengeful anger declaring, "No ones in the chair, come on! Come on! Sweeney's waiting, I want you bleeders," It's hard to think of anything more thrilling. And yet, Powell's performance along with a glorious 28 piece orchestra only partially makes-up for the Virginia Opera Company's rather uneven production of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

Chicago 3Arts Announces Winners of Annual 3Arts Awards

CHICAGO, IL (October 7, 2014)—Chicago nonprofit 3Arts has increased the amount of its annual unrestricted awards for women artists, artists of color, and artists with disabilities to$25,000, effective with the 7th annual 3Arts Awards tonight, Oct. 6, 2014. Ten Chicago-area artists working in the performing, teaching, and visual arts will receive a total of $250,000 in a celebratory gathering at the Museum of Contemporary Art. Previously, 3Arts presented annual awards of $15,000.

Robert Mann Gallery is pleased to announce Ansel Adams: Classic Images. Presenting some of both Adams' best-known photographs as well as stellar lesser-seen works—including several vintage prints dating back to the artist's very early career in the 1920s—this group by the legendary photographer spans the grand scope of his Western landscapes. Seminal images such as Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico and El Capitan Sunrise, Winter, Yosemite National Park, CAshowcase Adams' gift for dramatic truth: deep black skies loom over sleeping, ivory-lit villages, and halcyon clouds frame chiaroscuro cliffs above the forest floor. As Adams once said, 'Sometimes I think I do get to places just when God is ready to have somebody click the shutter,' (Interview with Milton Esterow, ArtNews, 1984).
TV: NEWSIES Hits the Road - In Rehearsal with the Company of the National Tour!

Disney Theatrical Productions will present the eagerly anticipated North American tour of Broadway's Tony® Award-winning smash hit musical, Disney's NEWSIES. Rehearsals began on Wednesday, September 3 in New York City in preparation for the first performance on Saturday, October 11 in Schenectady, NY at Proctors. During its first year of touring in the 2014-15 season, the production will play 25 cities, over 43 weeks.
The production features Dan DeLuca as 'Jack Kelly', Steve Blanchard as 'Joseph Pulitzer', Stephanie Styles as 'Katherine', Angela Grovey as 'Medda Larkin', Jacob Kemp as 'Davey', Zachary Sayle as 'Crutchie', and Vincent Crocilla and Anthony Rosenthal alternating the role of 'Les.' Lookingglass Theatre Company announces casting for the return of signature Lookingglass production Lookingglass Alice, adapted and directed by Ensemble Member David Catlin from the works of Lewis Carroll, produced in association with The Actors Gymnasium. Artistic Associates Lauren Hirte and Lindsey Noel Whiting both return to share the role of Alice. Two years ago, with funding from The James Irvine Foundation and in partnership with Latino Health Access, South Coast Repertory launched a play-development project in Santa Ana called Dialogue/Dialogos. The project captured the stories and memories of nearly 1,000 of the city's Latino residents, which created the core of a new bilingual play, The Long Road Today/El Largo Camino de Hoy,written by Jose Cruz Gonzalez.

La MaMa - the world-renowned theatre complex in the heart of New York City's East Village - today announced the cast for its first production of its 53rd Season entitled "LA MAMA EARTH," featuring works that raise awareness of world ecology and social justice both locally and globally. The centerpiece will be three diverse, international productions and adaptations of William Shakepeare's The Tempest from the US, Korea and Italy. MULTISTAGES has announced the new musical by award-winning Anita Velez-Mitchell, platinum-winning composers Dean Landon and Anika Paris, TEMPLE OF THE SOULS, with musical direction by Bruce Baumer and directed by Artistic Director Lorca Peress. TEMPLE OF THE SOULS will play a limited engagement at Theater for the New City - Johnson Theater (155 First Avenue, btw 9th/10th, NYC). Performances begin tonight, September 16 and continue through Sunday, September 28. Opening Night is Thursday, September 18 (8 p.m.).
ESPN Announces Fall Slate for 30 F0R 30 Documentaries

ESPN Films today revealed the films that will make up its fall 2014 30 for 30 slate. The series will return for a six-week run Tuesday nights on ESPN beginning October 7, with one additional film in December.
