The Metropolitan Opera announced today that it will offer free tickets for each of its productions to federal government employees affected by the ongoing government shutdown. Singer/conductor Barbara Hannigan makes her New York conducting debut with the Juilliard Orchestra in works by Strauss, Haydn, Debussy, Sibelius, and Bartok on Friday, February 8, 2019, at 7:30pm in Alice Tully Hall. The program features Strauss' "Salome's Dance" from Salome, Op. 54; Haydn's Symphony No. 96 in D Major, Hob. I:96, ("The Miracle"); Debussy's Syrinx (flute soloist to be announced); Sibelius' Luonnatar, Op. 70, with Juilliard soprano Meghan Kasanders; and Bartok's Suite from The Miraculous Mandarin. Hannigan made her debut as a conductor in 2011 at the Chatelet in Paris with Stravinsky's Renard; the soprano has been dividing her time between singing and conducting ever since.

Tafelmusik brings an 18th-century Roman soiree to vivid life with The Harlequin Salon, a new multimedia program created, scripted, and illustrated by Tafelmusik oboist and artist Marco Cera. Combining music, caricature sketches, projected images, costumes, and text, The Harlequin Salon opens a door into the glittering world of Pier Leone Ghezzi - renowned painter, consummate party host, and history's first professional caricaturist. The Harlequin Salon features guest artists Roberta Invernizzi, soprano, and Dino Goncalves, actor, with stage direction by Guillaume Bernardi (Frankfurt Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Trisha Brown Dance Company). Rafael Payare's initial concert as Music Director Designate of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra featured four familiar and easily appreciated pieces, including Mozart's Overture to Don Giovanni and the topically related Don Juan by Richard Strauss. In a different program two nights later Payare repeated only Strauss's tone poem. Its optimism recalled the mood of the earlier concert while its darkness signaled the predominant mood of the revised program. San Diego's new conductor-to-be managed to excite sellout audiences both nights.
The Sands Point Preserve Conservancy, located on the Gold Coast of Long Island, New York, will present four magical concerts on February 2, April 6, July 13 and October 5, 2019, followed by themed dinners in four stunning locations across the Preserve.
