Phyllis Nagy's play, The Scarlet Letter, has the words 'adapted from the novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne,' as opposed to simply saying 'an adaptation,' which is more typical. This is a subtle way of stating that the play is not intended to be a literal lifting of the story but more of a re-telling --with a purpose. Nagy's play is an examination of the deep, conflicting, often childish emotions of the adult characters, as partly witnessed and narrated by Hester Prynne's illegitimate daughter, Pearl, and shared with us. It is also a feminist work, in which the fates of a woman and a girl are seemingly controlled by the men, only to be thwarted because of Hester and Pearl's courageous willingness to follow their own paths. This gives the play a much more modern feel, in spite of the Puritan-style clothing the cast will wear. The language of the play is also more contemporary - and therefore less stilted than many plays set in an imagined past. We are approaching the play as a metaphor for our modern society: this is the past from which we came - where are we now?

Bravo starts the year off on a high note as Golden Globe-winner Jim Carrey, one of the most sought-after guests in 'Inside the Actors Studio' history, takes the hot seat on Monday, January 10th at 8pm et/pt. Host James Lipton first invited Carrey 17 years ago to appear on the show and on the night of the memorable taping, told the audience Carrey is worth the '17 years of foreplay.' Leaving no stone unturned, Lipton courses through Carrey's early days as a class clown in school to the janitorial job he had to take in order to support his family. Carrey talks about how he developed his character for Ace Ventura and reveals that his technique was similar to Anthony Hopkins method for creating Hannibal Lector. Carrey traverses his career from In Living Color, The Mask, The Truman Show and his most recent blockbuster hit, I Love You, Phillip Morris, which was just nominated in the category of 'Best Comedy' for the 16th Annual Critics' Choice Movie Awards. Broadway leading man and AMERICAN IDOL season 2 contestant Josh Strickland spoke to me yesterday about his career so far - on a trip from the Broadway stage in TARZAN, to the burlesque stage in Jerry Mitchell's PEEP SHOW in Las Vegas, right to the concert stage in NYC on Friday night in SIR TIM RICE & FRIENDS - all in just a handful of years. All of that is without even mentioning season two of the smash hit reality series HOLLY'S WORLD that he co-stars on, which will be following KEEPING UP WITH THE KARDASHIANS: KARDASHIANS TAKE NEW YORK on Sunday nights starting January 23 on E!. Also, Josh shared with me the first news about his new dance album coming out later this year, as well, which is the centerpiece of his storyline on the show this season! More information about the one night only NY TIMES Arts & Leisure-hosted SIR TIM RICE & FRIENDS event on Friday at 6 PM is available here.
