In the famous 1960s hit 'Is That All There Is?' by Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, Peggy Lee croons the melancholy lyric, 'If that's all there is, my friend, then, let's keep dancing. Let's break out the booze and have a ball, if that's all there is.' While this song ironically doesn't make it into the eclectic catalog of tunes that fuel THE LAST TWO PEOPLE ON EARTH: AN APOCALYPTIC VAUDEVILLE, currently in its world premiere at the A.R.T. in Cambridge, it could easily have become the show's theme song. When a flood of epic proportions wipes out all but two scraggly survivors, played as a pair of Estragon and Vladimir-style hobos by Mandy Patinkin and Taylor Mac, there is very little left for them to do but sing and dance.

Tanya Barfield's THE CALL has come to the Atlas Performing Arts Center on H Street in a production that gives full value to the huge questions posed by the play. THE CALL does not give easy answers and that is just fine with me. But it sure makes you think. Inspired by Barfield's own experience with international adoption, THE CALL is not a documentary by any means. This is a very human story, with one eye on the personal and one eye looking beyond to the big picture, a hallmark of brilliant theatre if there ever was one. Director Shirley Serotsky's precise direction enhances the global scope while remaining focused on Annie and Peter's bumpy road to parenthood.

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels opened to critical acclaim in the West End last April. It's taken a while to cross the pond having opened on Broadway over a decade ago but now UK-wide audiences are at last able to enjoy this production, having opened at the New Alexandra Theatre in Birmingham last night. The entire team of staff need to be commended on creating a wonderful experience before you even stepped in to the theatre. With French-speaking staff to martinis, they went the extra mile which should be recognised.

Janet Langhart Cohen, an Emmy-award nominated journalist and civil rights activist, will bring her timely play, 'Anne & Emmett,' to the MetroStage theater. Running today, May 7 through Saturday, May 9, the one-act play is an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, both victims of racial and religious intolerance and hatred. Acclaimed director Thomas W. Jones II ('The Islands' 'Bessie's Blues') will direct the piece, with the belief it will help add to the dialogue around these issues.
