Virginia Rep Celebrates 60th Anniversary with STEEL MAGNOLIAS, Now thru 8/25

Virginia Repertory Theatre celebrates the 60th anniversary of the founding of Barksdale Theatre at Hanover Tavern with a production of Steel Magnolias featuring an all-star cast. The show opens tonight, July 12, 2013 at Hanover Tavern, 13181 Hanover Courthouse Road, and runs through August 25, coinciding with the official anniversary on August 1. Sixty years ago in 1953, six actors, two children, a dog and two pigs moved into a historic ruin called Hanover Tavern. The transplanted New Yorkers founded Central Virginia's first professional theatre and named the company in memory of a deceased college friend, Barbara Barksdale.

Neil Simon's RUMORS Set for Saint Michael's Playhouse, 7/17-27

A team of experienced pros with extensive Broadway, regional and TV experience, will perform the hilarious, madcap comedy RUMORS, by Neil Simon, at the Saint Michael's Playhouse July 17 to 27. The show will be staged, evenings at 8 p.m. July 17 to 20, and 23-27 and matinees at 2 p.m. July 20 and 27.

Jason Robards Portrait Unveiled at Westport Country Playhouse

Westport Country Playhouse hosted an unveiling of a portrait of the late actor Jason Robards, for whom the theater is named, on Tuesday, July 9. The portrait depicts Robards in the role of Cornelius Melody in 'A Touch of the Poet' by Eugene O'Neill. Donated to the Playhouse by Robards's children, Jake and Shannon, it is displayed in the Playhouse lobby. The portrait artist is Clyde Smith of Silvermine Arts Center. MCC Theater Youth Company to Kick Off FRESHPLAY FESTIVAL this Weekend

MCC THEATER (Robert LuPone, Bernard Telsey, William Cantler, Artistic Directors; Blake West, Executive Director) have announced plans for its 2013 FreshPlay Festival, featuring plays written by members of the MCC Theater Youth Company, a free, after-school program of New York City high school students interested in exploring self-expression and developing their acting and dramatic writing skills. All performances of FreshPlay Festival will take place atTelsey + Company (311 W 43rd Street, 10th Floor) and are free and open to the public.

In partnership with its diverse audience, built over three years of visceral, actor and text driven progressive classics, Quintessence hopes to further ignite the Philadelphia theatre scene through the essential and complex art of adapting the classics for the contemporary stage.

Jennifer Fouche, Angela Grovey & More Set for MADAME WALKER AND THE DIVINE DREAM at NYMF, 7/10 & 13

The New York Musical Theatre Festival (NYMF) presents Madam Walker and the Divine Dream. Performances will take place on July 10th at 3:00PM & 7:00PM and July 13th at 8:00PM at The Studio at Theatre Row (410 W. 42nd Street). Starring Jennifer Fouche* (Off-Broadway's Sistas), Angela Grovey* (Broadway's Leap of Faith), two time Audelco Award Winner Juson Williams*, Kenya Lee*, Cheryl Gadsden, Annie Lee Moffett*, Carrie Compere* (Broadway bound Holler If You Hear Me, National tourShrek the Musical), Audelco nominated chandra thomas*, and Michael Roberts* (National and International tour West Side Story, Dreamgirls) . The book and lyrics are written by Steve Mackes and music by Joseph-Vernon Banks. Kevin Ray serves as music director and Bayo is stage manager.

DMT to Present Staged Reading of THE LANGUAGE ARCHIVE, 7/30

Irish Rep Presents Conor McPherson's THE WEIR, 5/23-7/07

Irish Repertory Theatre continues its 25th Anniversary Season with The Weir by Conor McPherson, author of SHINING CITY and THE SEAFARER - with previews set to begin May 15, prior to an official Off-Broadway opening May 23 on the Irish Repertory's Francis J. Greenburger Mainstage (132 West 22nd Street). Directed by Ciaran O'Reilly, performances are set to run through July 7.

TELL MARTHA NOT TO MOAN Opens at Fox Studio Theater Tonight

Featuring the original cast and starring Russell Costen and Adrienne Martin-Fullwood, Tell Martha Not to Moan by Clinnesha D. Sibley is about the 40th Commemoration of the Detroit Riot. A series of memories unfold in a family home in Detroit, 2007, and takes us on a unique and personal journey with a devoted but desolate elderly couple. With compelling dialogue and complex relationships, Tell Martha Not to Moan is a glimpse into the changing world as viewed from an African American home and was the 1st World Premiere of Athena Project's 2013 Arts Festival. It will be playing at the Fox Studio Theater July 5-21, Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 8pm, Sundays at 2pm. Tickets are $22 for adults, $20 for Students/Seniors/Military Discount, and $18 for groups of 8 or more.
