BWW Review: THE BODYGUARD at the Hippodrome Confounds Movie-Lovers
by Kristen Price
- Mar 3, 2017
THE BODYGUARD, which officially opened last night in Baltimore at the Hippodrome, is a strange little hybrid of a musical. On one hand, it's a pretty straightforward love story about a girl falling for a boy who has been hired to protect her. On the other, it's a jukebox musical using the works of Whitney Houston as a jumping off point. Both have their positives and negatives but therein lies the problem. Since the producers were so focused on making the show both a love story AND a jukebox musical, neither part received the attention it deserved, and both parts suffered because of it.

BWW Review: You'll Wanna Feel the Heat of THE BODYGUARD at the Ohio Theatre
by Christina Mancuso
- Feb 16, 2017
Love was in the air when a packed house celebrated Valentine's Day on opening night of THE BODYGUARD at the Ohio Theatre. Starting out with a bang (literally), Deborah Cox dominated the stage with her powerhouse voice and stunning presence as 'Rachel Marron', originally played by the late Whitney Houston in the feature film of the same name. But instead of embodying the fictional character Rachel Marron, this superstar channeled every nuance of legendary Whitney Houston in what felt more like a tribute concert to the late, great diva. In fact, it felt more like an actual concert by Whitney herself -- So much so, that during one of her climactic moments, someone in the audience even shouted, 'Whitney's in the house!'

BWW Review: THE BODYGUARD Provides A Glitzy and Lively Evening of Whitney Houston Classics
by Rachel Weinberg
- Feb 3, 2017
THE BODYGUARD, based on the eponymous film starring Whitney Houston as pop star Rachel Marron and Kevin Costner as her bodyguard Frank Farmer, has plenty of glitz and glamour to go around in its current engagement at Broadway In Chicago's Oriental Theatre. Throughout the night, lead Deborah Cox shines as Rachel in a never-ending array of glittery costumes from Tim Hatley (who also designed the set). And when Cox tears into one of Houston's classic numbers, it's also a joy.
