Producers announced today that P.J. Griffith (Giant, American Idiot) and Christina Sajous (Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark, American Idiot) will star in the industry lab presentation of the new musical, BEYOND THE MUSIC, on January 28th and 29th. They join previously announced cast members Rob Bartlett (How To Succeed In Business Without Really Trying), Katie Rose Clarke (Wicked), Claybourne Elder (Bonnie and Clyde) and Tony Award-winner Karen Ziemba (Contact, Curtains). BEYOND THE MUSIC features a book by Andy Sandberg, music and lyrics by Cliff Downs and Katie Kahanovitz, and direction by Sandberg, with choreography by AC Ciulla and music supervision and arrangements by Fred Lassen.

Before the musical Annie came to Broadway in 1977, few shows besides Oliver and The Sound of Music featured singing and dancing kids. There was the occasional child role in shows such as The Music Man and Peter Pan, but nowhere near the number of opportunities for skilled and talented kids on Broadway today. So in 1980, when I got a call to be the musical director and host of a New York City revue of professional show business kids, it was something new and different. As a matter of fact, the show would be taking place at the aptly named Something Different, New York's first "Dessert Nightclub" on the Upper East Side. The club was owned by Patricia Young, and besides the uncommon alcohol-free menu, the entire waitstaff was comprised of singers, who performed all night long.

The 39th Daytime Emmy awards took place yesterday, June 23. Top honors for Drama Series went to ABC's General Hospital and its leading man Anthony Geary. General Hospital's Jonathan Jackson and Nancy Lee Grahn also took the awards for Best Supporting Actor/Actress in a Drama Series.
