This month of public programs presented by the National Jazz Museum in Harlem features retrospectives (Louis Armstrong and Hank Jones), discussions with two of the most prominent and influential contemporary saxophonists (Joe Lovano and Steve Coleman) as well as a talk with top jazz journalist Bill Milkowski, and live performances that riff on the connection between visual art and jazz, by trumpeter Marcus Printup and trombonist Ryan Keberle at the Rubin Museum of Art, and the NJMH All Stars at the Studio Museum in Harlem. Whether your taste leans toward the historical and traditional, or to the futuristic and cutting edge, you'll find it this month. Mark your calendar and bring some friends!

Jazz pianist Cyrus Chestnut brought his considerable talents to the stage of the Sheldon Concert Hall for a show (April 10, 2010) that featured selections of music more commonly associated with Elvis Presley. And, while this might seem to be an unlikely combination, Chestnut demonstrated his traditional jazz roots by improvising his way through these familiar melodies in dynamic and adventurous fashion. Chestnut proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he attacked the keys for each number, bending and twisting the chord progressions to suit his fancy, and providing a scintillating performance for an enthralled and appreciative audience.

But on Chestnut's new CD, Cyrus Plays Elvis, he offers a fresh outlook on Presley.

Northrop Music at the University of Minnesota presents the tenacious force of Regina Carter, her generation's greatest jazz violinist. Carter is crossing borders with her upcoming album called Reverse Thread.

The Monterey Jazz Festival is back on the road - and that road takes it to the Jorgensen Cabaret at 8 pm on Friday and Saturday, February 5 and 6 at 8 p.m. This year's talent tour features The Kenny Barron Trio, violinist Regina Carter, baritone Kurt Elling, and guitarist Russell Malone.
