Actress & Recording Star Monica Lewis, Voice of Chiquita Banana, Dies at 93

Monica Lewis, a former Benny Goodman vocalist who headlined the very first broadcast of the 'Ed Sullivan Show,' was THE VOICE of the popular Chiquita BANANA cartoons, clowned opposite Jerry Lewis, Red Skelton and Danny Kaye, turned down a marriage proposal from Ronald Reagan and went on to play co-starring roles in such films as 'Earthquake,' 'Airport 1975' and 'The Concorde--Airport '79,' died on June 12 of natural causes at her apartment in Woodland Hills, CA. She was 93.

Opera Philadelphia to Premiere Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, Today

Legendary jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker (1920-1955) was "a genius who lived fast and died young, revolutionizing an art form in a few short years" (NPR). The Grammy Award-winning bebop legend is the subject of Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD, the first world premiere in almost four decades for Opera Philadelphia, recognized by Opera News as "one of the leading instigators of new work in the country." The new chamber opera was created for American tenor Lawrence Brownlee, a nominee for the 2015 International Opera Male Singer of the Year Award, by composer Daniel Schnyder, whose "thrilling classical-tinged jazz blend…constantly pushes the envelope" (Jazz Times), to a libretto by award-winning poet and playwright Bridgette Wimberly. Directed by Ron Daniels under the leadership of Music Director Corrado Rovaris, Charlie Parker's YARDBIRD premieres in Opera Philadelphia's Aurora Series for Chamber Opera, crowning the company's 40th Anniversary Season with a five-performance run in the Kimmel Center's intimate Perelman Theater (June 5-14). Erich Bergen Coming to Martinis Above Fourth Table + Stage, 5/18

On Monday, May 18 at 8:00 PM, Martinis Above Fourth Table + Stage in San Diego is presenting TV and movie star Erich Bergen in Erich Bergen - Live! Best known for his performance as Bob Gaudio in the Clint Eastwood film of Jersey Boys (reprising the role he played on stage for over three years) and his costarring role as Blake Moran on the CBS nighttime drama Madam Secretary (recently renewed for its second season after consistently being in the Top 10 since its debut in September 2014), Erich Bergen will bring his dry wit and smooth vocals to the Martinis Above Fourth main stage with musical director Michael Orland (American Idol). The show will feature songs from Bergen's stage and screen career and songs from his two EP releases - his self-titled debut and the recent Never Give Up. The singer and actor will appear at Martinis Above Fourth for one show only on Monday, May 18 at 8:00 PM. In addition to the San Diego appearance, Chris Isaacson Presents is presenting Bergen's show at Catalina Jazz Club in Los Angeles on May 21 and 22.
