Bikini Bottom will soon surface in Chicago, and in anticipation of The SpongeBob Musical's first performance on Tuesday, June 7th at Broadway in Chicago's Oriental Theatre, the production has begun rolling out a number of behind-the-scenes videos on the process of adapting one of television's biggest animated hits for the theatre. Broadway In Chicago and The SpongeBob Musical have announced a one-week extension through Sunday, July 10. Performances will begin on Tuesday, June 7 at Broadway In Chicago's Oriental Theatre (24 West Randolph Street, Chicago, IL).

From tonight, May 7, through June 4, 2016, SpeakEasy Stage Company will proudly present the Boston Professional Premiere of DOGFIGHT, a powerful new musical about unexpected love, loss, and brotherhood, based on the 1991 film starring River Phoenix and Lili Taylor.

Nominations for the 2016 Fred and Adele Astaire Awards, which honor outstanding dance and choreography on stage and screen, were announced today at the Friar's Club by New York Post columnist Michael Riedel. For the first time, the Fred and Adele Astaire Awards have explored recognizing excellence in dance, movement, and choreography off-Broadway. Twenty eligible shows in the non-profit and commercial off-Broadway arenas met the eligibility requirements and were considered.

I will admit to the fact that the original 1992 film of "Newsies" is one of my guilty pleasures. So when I heard they were making a stage version of the musical I was dubious but excited. The original already made you overlook much of the schlock, cheese, historical inaccuracies and plot holes. But the stage version, currently at the Paramount Theatre, with its retooled story forces even more of a willing suspension of disbelief almost to the point of brain death. But if you can manage that level of tucking rational thought into some dark corner then you're bound to have a good time as this spectacle is loaded with tons of vibrancy and a bevy of cute "boys" who sure do sing and dance pretty.

This Sunday, April 17 marks the first anniversary for Lincoln Center Theater's Tony Award-winning production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's The King and I, directed by Bartlett Sher, at the Vivian Beaumont Theater (150 West 65 Street).

Goodman Theatre has announced Broadway stars John Dossett and Douglas Sills will join the cast of War Paint, a new musical starring two-time Tony Award winners Patti LuPone and Christine Ebersole as Helena Rubinstein and Elizabeth Arden, respectively. Dossett will portray Tommy Lewis, Miss Arden's husband and chief marketing officer, and Sills will portray the ambitious Harry Fleming, Madame Rubinstein's clubby confidante and faithful ally.  

'Newsies' made the headlines as a flop Disney film back in 1992, but the musical garnered a cult following that led to its 2012 revamp on Broadway. The national tour of that production, now on its final leg, carries the banner to Sacramento this week with its own outstanding effects worthy of above-the-fold, front page attention.

Broadway In Chicago and The SpongeBob Musical have set complete casting for the Chicago engagement, announcing that Carlos Lopez has joined the cast as Mr. Krabs.

Broadway In Chicago has announced individual tickets for the return engagement of Disney's NEWSIES will go on sale to the public on Tuesday, April 12. Back by popular demand, Disney's NEWSIES will play the Cadillac Palace Theatre (151 W Randolph) July 28 through August 7, 2016.

The 34th Annual Fred & Adele Astaire Awards, which recognizes outstanding achievements in dance on Broadway and in film, takes place on Monday, May 16, 2016.

Casting has been announced for the Seattle engagement of Disney's NEWSIES.   The Tony Award-winning production will begin performances at The Paramount Theatre on Tuesday, April 26 for a limited engagement through Sunday, May 1.
