Music Mountain, America's oldest continuing summer chamber music festival, continues its 85th anniversary season with a mid-season benefit concert featuring the master pianist Peter Serkin and the acclaimed Orion String Quartet, July 19 (3PM), performing a distinguished program including Haydn, plus works for piano and strings by Brahms, and Dvorak. Also appearing this weekend is the audience favorite, Gunsmoke today, July 18 (6:30PM). This summer, Music Mountain has welcomed some of the most highly regarded string quartets in the country -- The Emerson String Quartet opened the season, audiences enjoyed The Juilliard String Quartet, and now Music Mountain has the privilege of hosting the Orion String Quartet. And, as always, the Twilight Series offers a wide range of country, folk and jazz concerts that are fun for the entire family! Concerts are scheduled thru September 14.

On March 31, 300 friends, artists and supporters gathered to celebrate and honor Soho Rep.'s Board Chair Jon Dembrow at their annual spring gala. Forty-five minutes into the evening, the beam supporting a second-story balcony at the event venue, Angel Orensanz Center, cracked. The building was deemed unsafe and all the guests were evacuated by the FDNY. The cancellation of the event and on-site auction left Soho Rep. with a projected end-of-the-fiscal-year deficit of $68,000.

Trying, the award-winning play inspired by the real-life experiences of playwright Joanna McClelland Glass as personal secretary to Biddle during the last year of his life, opens at International City Theatre on Aug. 22, directed by John Henry Davis and starring Tony Abatemarco and Paige Lindsey White.

Houston Grand Opera's U.S. premiere of Mieczyslaw Weinberg's The Passenger- the long-suppressed Holocaust opera that Shostakovich declared 'a perfect masterpiece'- earned virtually universal acclaim earlier this year. The Chicago Tribune declared The Passenger to be an 'engrossing, thought-provoking experience,' while the Houston Chronicle praised the presentation for 'ingenious storytelling, potent music, commanding performances and vivid, fast-paced staging.' Now HGO brings the David Pountney production of The Passenger for its New York premiere in three performances- today, July 10, 12, 13 -at the Park Avenue Armory as part of the 2014 Lincoln Center Festival.
