by Andrew White - Jul 19, 2017

Happenstance's ensemble is chock full of talents, and when combined in a show like this it is impossible not to smile the whole way through. For kids you have slapstick, bad puns and the occasional chance for audience participation (we can make it rain, people). For adults you have visual puns from classic art, statues, and familiar French tunes that never go out of fashion.

BWW Review: Magical A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM at WSC Avant Bard
by Andrew White - Jan 25, 2016

WSC Avant-Bard's magical production of Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream offers is an absolute delight. It doesn't matter if you are the most hardened grown-up or the most precocious, spoiled brat the world has ever seen. You will be entranced by this production's creativity for much of the show's 2+ hours' traffic on the Gunston Arts Center stage.

BWW Review: CABARET NOIR Presents Hardboiled Theatre, Cinema Style
by Cybele Pomeroy - Nov 10, 2015

If you enjoyed CABARET MACABRE, you'll be pleased by CABARET NOIR. Imagine a favorite musical artist releasing a new album: it's familiar but fresh. The Cabaret is a series of film-like clips, presented possibly in chronological order… or perhaps not. It's hard to tell. There is a glimmer of story, a hatful of characters, a whisper of atmosphere, a smorgasbord of music and a scent of mystery. Those who love Film Noir will be delighted, those who don't care for it will be charmed and amused, and those who don't know about it will never hereafter be able to take it seriously. Those who have never heard of Happenstance Theatre and its current show CABARET NOIR are seriously missing out on a wonderful thing.

BWW Reviews: IMPOSSIBLE! A HAPPENSTANCE CIRCUS Impossibly Inventive
by Pamela Roberts - Jul 2, 2015

Happenstance Theater's IMPOSSIBLE! is impossibly inventive, whimsical, and tender. The tribute to classic Depression-era circus life uses period music, a clever costume choice or the arch of an eyebrow to convey far more than mere words are able. IMPOSSIBLE! is a family-friendly production that hits just the right tone - funny not ridiculous, kindhearted not cloying, smart not pretentious. The original piece of physical theater was devised by the Happenstance ensemble. We venture both under the big top and behind the scenes to witness the camaraderie, loneliness, frustrations and foibles of the band of performers.
