BWW Dance Review: Pennsylvania Ballet's LE CORSAIRE

When Angel Corella assumed the position of Artistic Director of the Pennsylvania Ballet and didn't renew many contracts of its former dancers, there was a negative buzz all over. I can't comment on that, since I was not privy to any information, but judging by the performance of his new production of “Le Corsaire” on Sunday, April 20 2017, Corella has my great admiration and respect. In fact, this entire season has been one of artistic excellence and a new shot of creativity with dancers. After a shaky start with Corolla, the company has assumed a role as one of our top companies, something it never quite had in my estimation before.

Boston Ballet Launches 53rd Season With the North American Premiere of LE CORSAIRE, Today

Boston Ballet's 53rd season begins with the North American premiere of Ivan Liška's adventure and romance-filled Le Corsaire, with music by Adolphe Adam, Leo Delibes, Cesare Pugni, Riccardo Drigo, and Prinz von Oldenburg, performed by the Boston Ballet Orchestra. The narrative follows a beautiful maiden, a wealthy aristocrat determined to add her to his harem, and a dashing pirate even more resolved to save her. Based on Marius Petipa's 19th-century classic, Liška's version of Le Corsaire was created for the Bavarian State Ballet in 2007. Liška enlisted the assistance of dance historian Doug Fullington to decipher the choreography from its original Stepanov dance notation, which is housed in Harvard University Library's Theatre Collection. Le Corsaire will run from October 27 to November 6, 2016 at the Boston Opera House.

BWW Review: Misty Copeland is a Principal Ballerina of Great Worth

In her first season as principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre, Misty Copeland has hit the stage glowing. Dancing both new roles, to her, and those she has performed before, while still a soloist with the company, she brought new life and light to the ballets. At every performance, the excitement throughout the audience was palpable, from the moment they entered the Metropolitan Opera House, N.Y.C., to the explosion of applause, calls of brava, and other vocalizations of appreciation at the end of each performance.
