Loop 243's residency at the Tank Space for Visual and Performing Arts climaxes on November 10 in a rhythmist's dream world. In this series finale, master drummer John Amira joins Loop 243 to perform
traditional works for Bata drums, and Cuban jazz maestro Dafnis Prieto performs his original work. Wednesday, November 10, 8 p.m. at The Tank, 354 W. 45th Street, New York, NY 10036.
Titled Roots of Reality, this closing program acknowledges a grounding in Afro-Cuban esthetics. Throughout the evening, the rhythms and melodies of Afro-Cuban drumming are taken from the literal to the abstract.
Cuban bata drumming, with its infectious grooves and melodies, is a natural source of inspiration for musicians of all stripes. The music connects with listeners on both a gut level and intellectual plane.
Master drummer John Amira joins Loop 243 to perform this folkloric music of the Cuban Santeria as well as music from Haitian Vodou.
Cuban jazz drummer/composer Dafnis Prieto finds a beautiful marriage of his Cuban roots and contemporary jazz. He will perform original solo music and collaborations with Loop 243.
Loop 243 will perform large-scale electro-acoustic percussion works that are influenced by various world traditions. The group appears in expanded form with NYC veterans Tom Burnett (piano/organ and voice),
James Godwin (voice), James Armstrong (percussion) and Mat Fields (bass).
