Rising Phoenix Rep Sends Plays To Support Trapped Miners 9/8

After reading and following The Situation of the thirty-three miners trapped two miles underground in Chile, Rising Phoenix Rep artistic director Daniel Talbott was inspired by a quote from an Associated Press article he read about the rescue team trying to create an entertainment program to help get them through this ordeal:

"Establishing a daily and nightly routine is important, the minister said, adding that having fun also will be critical. The rescue team is creating an entertainment program "that includes singing, games of movement, playing cards. We want them to record songs, to make videos, to create works of theater for the family."

Rising Phoenix Rep has put out a call for short plays as a way of gathering work from the New York theatre community and beyond to hopefully help out in a small way and support the miners as they wait for rescue. Plays can be submitted in Spanish or English, and those in English will be translated by volunteer theatre artists from the community as they are able. Please send plays no later than Wednesday, September 8th.

All theatre artists and people from every background are welcomed and encouraged to submit plays in the spirit of hope for both the miners and their families with the message of courage and support. The company states, "We know this isn't a lot but we thought it was hopefully something, and in the end we think this is what theatre's all about: sitting in the dark and listening to stories - especially when you need them most."

Founded in 1999, Rising Phoenix Repertory began by producing an ongoing reading series of new plays and has continued to add workshops, festivals, and highly praised productions of new plays. Recent productions include the acclaimed, sold-out Off-Broadway runs of Slipping, produced with Piece by Piece Productions and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, and Too Much Memory (also with Piece by Piece Productions) which transferred to the New York Theatre Workshop's Fourth Street Theatre after winning the FringeNYC award for Outstanding Play in 2008. Other recent productions include Afterclap, Birthday and Don't Pet the Zookeeper (Seventh Street Small Stage); 365 Days/365 Plays (Jimmy's No. 43 and The Public Theater); What Happened When (HERE Arts Center); Fall Forward (part of the Sitelines/River to River Festival); The Telling Trilogy (including The Ride, 2006 NYIT Award Nominee - Outstanding Original Short Script- Crystal Skillman), Rules of the Universe (Winner, 2007 NYIT Awards for Outstanding Original Short Script - Daniel Reitz and Director - Daniel Talbott); Gift by Mark Schultz and Ponies by Mike Batistick (FringeNYC). Inspired by Joe Cino and his Caffe Cino, starting in September the company will present Cino Nights, a year-and-a-half-long event of fully produced plays commissioned for the Seventh Street Small Stage.
