New 42nd Street Studios Celebrates 10 Years

Today, the New 42nd Street, Inc. announces the 10th Anniversary of the New 42nd Street Studios, which opened its doors on June 21, 2000 and was built in response to the need for well-designed, centrally-located and affordable rehearsal space in New York City for dance and theater companies.

The New 42nd Street Studios, located between 7th and 8th Avenues on 42nd Street at the "crossroads of the world," is a 10-story, 84,000 square foot rehearsal studio/office/theater complex owned and operated by The New 42nd Street. The building is home to five nonprofit performing arts groups, 14 rehearsal studios, the New 42nd Street administrative offices and a 199-seat theater called The Duke on 42nd Street, and it is used year-round by a diverse mix of nonprofit dance, theater and opera groups, as well as commercial Broadway musicals and plays.

Of the 13 Broadway productions that rehearsed at The New 42nd Street Studios this season, 11were recently nominated for a TONY Award® , including: American Idiot; Fela!; Million Dollar Quartet; Promises, Promises; Fences; and Come Fly Away. In the last decade since The New 42nd Street Studios opened, 789 nonprofit and 570 commercial companies have rehearsed in the building, and 190 companies have performed at The Duke on 42nd Street theater.

Designed by the firm Platt Byard Dovell Architects, The New 42nd Street Studios building has been recognized and honored for excellence in design by the local, state and national chapters of the American Institute of Architects, and was recently recognized in New York Magazine's 40th Anniversary issue as a leading work of architecture that best defines New York City.
