Character Break-down

Sara Josephine James –aka- Destiny Rose: Black woman, late twenties to mid-thirties, a dancer; a native Washingtonian. Gritty city boheme funk. Goverened by her passions. Earthy with one foot hovering in the air, ready to take off. Sensual freedom. Sometimes she is all nervous energy, a hot fire, bottled and just set out to cool. The wind fans her flame, and she will go off whichever direction her heart feels.

Roy Peoples –aka- Blue: black man, late twenties to mid thirties. Laid back vibe with a hunger just beneath the surface. Sturdy. Sexy. A firmly rooted tree. A deliberate decision-maker. His moments of vulnerability typically serve him well, but he’s not one to share that side of himself easily. A calculated cool that is not malicious. Self-contained, even when his choices are unpopular. He can withstand Sara’s storms, though he is often perplexed by them.

Khadija Freeman –aka- Rachel: black woman, mid-twenties. Grounded in the earth and the truth as it is. A person governed by principles, including integrity and deeply unconditional love. Fierce protector of all she loves. The judge and the jury among her peers.

Nikki Bledsoe: black woman, late twenties to mid thirties. A force. A cool breeze against the back of the neck. A persistent presence. An urgent need. A secret. A whisper. Must be capable of athletic movement.

The Mayor/Lead Talker in The Pocket Roll Call* –aka- John Grossman, The Anchorman and Mr. Littlejohn, The Property Manager, and The Subway Conductor: black man, late thirties to mid-forties; a guitar/bass player; a woman could play this character as well (playwright encourages this consideration); must have a presence that can lead the audience.

The Woman in Yellow/Vocals in The Pocket Roll Call** –aka- Ms. Legendare: black woman, late thirties to mid-forties; a dancer and strong vocalist. Must be capable of physicalized humor, and possessing a seasoned sensuality, a steady heat, and a deep belly laugh.

The Pocket Roll Call Band & Show: All percussion – all available cast members; between 1 actor (min) and 4actors (max) with The Mayor as Lead Talker and The Woman in Yellow –aka- Ms. Legendare as lead accompanying vocalist.
