Hilarious musical performed by a skilled cast.
Originally a cult classic film released in 1984 (I'm so old I remember it), it was a B Grade splatter film, with one difference-it had a good story line and one that resonates today even more than it did 40 years ago.
Toxic Avenger:The musical is a 2008 rock musical based on that film. The book of the musical was written by Joe DiPietro with its music by David Bryan (of Bon Jovi fame). Both wrote the lyrics. It is a comical take on a number of themes, including superhero stories, pollution, disability, politics, and the idea that New Jersey is inferior to other places.
A disclaimer, I am married to the director, so will not comment on the direction of the production.
The set is constructed of scaffolding and platforms providing us with three levels where the action takes place. The attention to detail was apparent and it is obvious that there has been a lot of hours put into this and it pays off. (Set design Richie Rewa)
Just as impressive is the costuming-the outfit of "Toxie" is outstanding. All costumes are of a high standard with an obviously well drilled team of dressers backstage to cope with the myriad of changes required during this performance. (Wardrobe Manager Christine Leadbeater, with Polly Crone and Mary Jamulski).
Sound was good, with dialogue able to be heard over the band so the balance was well handled. A few times the first one or two words were missed when changing the live mic to the performer, but this will improve as the season progresses. (sound operator Tom Smith)
Lighting was also good, setting the mood well.
The band was excellent. It's always good to have a live band playing and they were placed at the top of the stage, so were visible throughout. (Sue Windsor MD, Paul Gadd, Jevon Wright, Steve 'Shack' Morrison and Jonathon Wooley).
Performances were of a very high standard and it was apparent that the cast were very ready for this show to hit the stage. I cannot single any one of the cast out as they were all excellent. Corey Moir as Melvin/Toxie, Millie Fuller as Sarah, Kirsty Huszka as Mayor/Ma Ferd and the hard working pair Carys Tidy as Dudette and Richie Rewa as Dude, who played over 20 different characters between them. All were a joy to watch and listen to.
All songs were well choreographed, favourites being My big French boyfriend, Evil is hot and the Chase. (Melanie Heaphy)
The finale of Act one was a triumph for Kirsty Huszka, singing the song in two different voices, playing both the Mayor and Ma Ferd. It needs to be seen to be believed
The script and score is nothing short of hilarious. There are inappropriate lines galore, but in the context of this musical, it would be hard to be upset by any of them.
This has to be the funniest musical I have seen, but also, one with a topical message.
I have no hesitation in giving this show a highly recommended rating. If you want a quality nights entertainment, get along to see it during its short run.
