Scapegoat Carnivale Closes MEDEA, 10/30
Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre returns to the Centaur Theatre Company's Brave New Looks series after its three-time Mecca award-nominated production of Life is a Dream, to present Euripides' Medea, featuring a new translation by Andreas Apergis and Joseph Shragge. The play will be directed by Alison Darcy and Andreas Apergis, with original music by Brian Lipson, musical direction by David Oppenheim, set and costume design by Amy Keith, lighting design by David Perreault Ninacs, and production/stage management by Melanie St. Jacques. France Rolland will be playing Medea, opposite Andreas Apergis as Jason. The rest of the talented cast includes founder and former Artistic Director of the Centaur Theatre Maurice Podbrey, as well as Montreal-based actors George Bekiaris, Stefanie Buxton, Dusan Dukic, Diana Fajrajsl, Holly Gauthier Frankel, Alex Ivanovici, Gitu Jain, Melissa Trottier, Lindsay Wilson, Elijah Flomen and Thomas Rolland Apergis, and musician John Dodge.
Medea is one of the most influential and accessible of the Greek tragedies. Its plot revolves around the emotional fallout that occurs when thehero Jason leaves his wife Medea for King Kreon's daughter. Medea, after being exiled by the King, has one day to plot her revenge against Jason. That day is filled with dark machinations, political upheavals, and tragedy.
The production will be greatly inspired by Greece in the 1920s, after a population exchange between Greece and Turkey left the country with an influx of immigrants. This new Greek underclass produced Rembetika, a mournful music often compared to American blues. The chorus, singing in Rembetika style, will help highlight the play's theme of displacement, as well as create a modern setting for this mythical and harrowing domestic drama.
Produced by Scapegoat Carnivale Theatre for Centaur Theatre's Brave New Looks program, the play will be performed at the Centaur Theatre- 453 St. Francois Xavier.
