After the fantastic success in Paris at the théâtre du Châtelet, the new West Side Story’s company arrives into the Principality.
With the film version of this grandiose masterpiece by the original creative team, four very individual artistic geniuses, Leonard Bernstein, Jerome Robbins, Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim, awarded with ten Academy Awards, West Side Story became known to millions of spectators a few years after its Broadway premiere. On stage it continued to be one of the most successful and best loved musicals of all time, paving the way for the American musical theatre. The piece has maintained all its original sparkle and relevance. Next to the enthralling and deeply moving story it is Leonard Bernstein’s immortal songs, including “Tonight”, “Maria”, “America” and “Somewhere”, that make West Side Story such an enduring musical phenomenon.
The new production of West Side Story combines the unique vibrant music, the thrilling drama and the burning relevance of the original masterpiece in a lavish production with 36 actors and over 80 participants. Furthermore, it is marked by an element present in the authentic staging of the masterpiece and at the same time unique in the world: Jerome Robbins’ inimitable, breathtaking dance language, interpreted by Joey McKneely.
After acclaimed performances in Europe, Asia, and Australia, this highprofile production continues its success story in Germany and France.
