Decades Barbershop Quartet Presents SOUND OF MUSIC Sing-a-Long at the Orpheum Tonight

By:

The Orpheum's Summer Movie Series is pleased to present Decades, the world-renowned a cappella barbershop quartet, tonight, July 12 at 6:30 PM. Decades will perform contemporary songs combined with barbershop favorites. The group will conclude their performance by leading the audience in a fun, engaging vocal warm up before The Orpheum's showing of a special Sing-a-long version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC at 7:00 PM.

Ranked one of the top 50 quartets in the world, Decades hails from the Mid-South and has entertained audiences across the region. Decades is Craig Brown (Tenor), Shawn King (Baritone), Robert Strong (Lead), and Keith Therrell (Bass). The group features a variety of familiar tunes that spans Jazz, Swing, Rock, and Gospel.

"It's always exciting to sing at home in the Mid-South, but it is an honor to perform at the Orpheum," said Robert Strong, Lead vocalist. "Accompanying THE SOUND OF MUSIC with an a cappella concert is incredibly fitting, and we can't wait to get the audience warmed up for a night of singing with the Von Trapp Family."

Based on Rogers' and Hammerstein's stage production by the same name, THE SOUND OF MUSIC is inspired by the true story of the Trapp Family Singers. Set in Salzburg, Austria, just before World War II, the movie tells the story of Maria, a wide-eyed and adventurous nun in training, who becomes governess to seven mischievous children of widowed Navy Captain Georg Von Trapp. Maria re-introduces joy, laughter, and music to the family, and she soon wins over the children as well as Captain Von Trapp. But when the Nazi Army marches into Austria and Captain Von Trapp is called to active duty, the family is forced to attempt a risky - and musical - escape. This incredible Sing-a-long version of THE SOUND OF MUSIC includes subtitles for each number, allowing audiences to sing their favorite songs about their "favorite things!"

The Orpheum Theatre's 2013 Summer Movie Series, presented for a second year by Orion Federal Credit Union, commemorates the theatre's 85th Anniversary with the best-loved films of the past eight decades. The series will run from June to August at the Orpheum Theatre.
