Ogunquit Playhouse Annouces Children's Theatre Lineup

The Ogunquit Playhouse, is thrilled to announce a spectacular lineup of children's theatre productions beginning June 30. The 2018 Children's Theatre season features two Disney classics, a new take on a beloved story, and a contemporary favorite perfect for families and children of all ages. Children's Theatre productions are professionally designed and produced, and feature performances by the talented Playhouse Junior Players Camp students.

The Junior Players spend one to two weeks learning everything from acting, singing and choreography to understanding lighting, sound cues and blocking movements on stage before performing on the Ogunquit Playhouse mainstage with sets and costumes by the theatre's professional production team! This is a great opportunity to see a fully staged show designed for kids, and for friends and family to support their favorite budding performers. First up in the Ogunquit Playhouse Children's Theatre season is Disney's Sleeping Beauty, Kids on stage Saturday, June 30 at 10am and 1pm, and Sunday, July 1 at 10am. It's Princess Aurora's sixteenth birthday, and Flora, Fauna and Merryweather must use their fairy magic to save her from the spell of evil sorceress Maleficent! This classic fairytale comes to life with songs from the beloved Disney film, including "Once Upon a Dream," along with fun new songs "Maleficent!" and "A Little Magic Now."

Back by popular demand is the acclaimed Disney's The Lion King, Jr., on stage Saturday, July 21 at 10am and 1pm, and Sunday, July 22 at 10am. Simba the lion cub just can't wait to be king in the Ogunquit Playhouse production of Disney's The Lion King, Jr. The African savannah comes to joyous life on stage with Simba, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa, and all your favorite characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle and back again in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. Join Simba and the gang as they perform songs from the beloved film including "Hakuna Matata," "Can You Feel the Love Tonight," and "I Just Can't Wait to be King." This production is ideal for kids of all ages, so be sure to bring the whole family out to experience this exciting adventure in Africa!

One of the most beloved children's stories of all time, Tom Sawyer The Musical, comes to life on the Ogunquit Playhouse stage on Saturday, July 28 at 10am and 1pm, and Sunday, July 29 at 10am. Tom Sawyer is a rascal, a scamp, and a mischief-maker. He is also the best friend Huckleberry Finn has ever had. The two adventurers plot against a fearsome villain in this musical adaptation of Mark Twain's classic. Travel to the Mississippi Delta when life was as simple as straw hats and bib overalls with this delightful musical that includes the songs, "Paint the Town Red," "A Boy Like That!," and "Hannibal, The Only Place for Me."

Guaranteed to deliver excitement and fun, this Broadway-style musical is your chance to see your favorite movie brought to life when Disney's High School Musical, Jr. hits the stage Saturday, August 18 at 10am and 1pm, and Sunday, August 19 at 10am. It has everything you love about the first movie plus a few surprises! Watch the excitement as rivals Troy Bolton, captain of the basketball team, and Gabriella Montez, a beautiful but shy transfer student who excels in math and science, try out for the lead parts in their high school musical and as a result, divide the school. Despite other students' attempts to thwart their dreams, Troy and Gabriella resist peer pressure and rivalry, inspiring others along the way not to "Stick with the Status Quo." The stage production follows the much-loved story of the movie, featuring all your favorite characters and songs.

The Ogunquit Playhouse has four additional musicals slated for its main stage in 2018: Rodgers and Hammerstein classic Oklahoma! on stage now to July 7 celebrating its 75th Anniversary since opening on Broadway; the first regional production of the sumptuous new musical An American in Paris hitting the Ogunquit stage July 11 to August 4; and the U.S. premiere of the hilarious new musical Grumpy Old Men the Musical on stage August 8 to September 1 just in time to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the classic 1993 Warner Brothers film starring Jack Lemmon, Walter Matthau and Ann-Margret. Closing out the season is the Regional premiere of the multi-Tony Award-winning, international sensation Jersey Boys on stage September 5 to October 28. Elf the Musical will be produced for The Music Hall in Portsmouth, New Hampshire just in time for the holidays November 28 to December 16, 2018.
