THE DRUNKEN CITY Opens At Cal Rep

A whirlwind night on the town closes California Repertory Company's fall season with laughs and revelations. The Drunken City by Adam Bock plays at the University Theatre from November 29-December 8.

The Drunken City offers a lighthearted reflection on marriage and what it means to be in love. Three young brides-to-be find their lives going topsy-turvy when one of them begins to question her future after a chance encounter with a recently jilted handsome stranger. The Drunken City is a wildly theatrical take on the mystique of marriage and the ever-shifting nature of love and identity in a city that never sleeps. Artistic Director Jeff Janisheski applauds the innovative style of The Drunken City. "It's a romantic comedy based on the well-worn "pre-wedding-jitters" cliché - a story rooted in Shakespeare as well as popular films like Philadelphia Story."

Director Marya Mazor recently directed Donald Margulies' The Model Apartment for The Geffen Playhouse and Pure Confidence for Lower Depth Theatre Ensemble. Marya was one of eight women chosen for the AFI Directing Workshop for Women, where she directed the short film The Winged Man, featuring Ana Ortiz, written by playwright and Academy Award Nominee Jose Rivera (Motorcycle Diaries). She also recently directed Ivy & Bean at South Coast Repertory, Out of Our Father's House for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, That Pretty Pretty... or the Rape Play at Son of Semele, The English Bride at the Road Theatre, and Dragon Play and Time Stands Still at The Chance, as well as Aladdin for Walt Disney Imagineering.

Playwright Adam Bock's other works include The Thugs (Obie Award), Swimming in the Shallows (3 BATCC Awards, Clauder Award), Five Flights (Glickman Award), The Typographer's Dream, The Shaker Chair and Three Guys and a Brenda (Heideman Award). His plays have been commissioned, developed and produced in NYC by MTC, Playwrights Horizons, Second Stage, Soho Rep, Primary Stages, The Vineyard, Rattlestick, Clubbed Thumb, and regionally at Yale, Trinity Rep, the O'Neill, the Humana Festival, UCross/Sundance, in San Francisco, LA, Seattle, Salt Lake, Montreal, Toronto, London, and Edinburgh, among others.
