Musical Theatre Instructor - George Street Playhouse

Summary of Position

George Street Playhouse, a professional, producing theatre company 40 minutes from Manhattan, seeks a Musical Theatre Instructor. Primary responsibilities include teaching Musical Theater classes for students ages 11 and up, including all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Weekly classes should provide

students with opportunities to focus on acting, singing, and basic choreography. Fun and engaging short plays and musicals should be selected to help students comfortably build their stage presence and expand their performance skillset. Live performances are expected regularly throughout the year.

Job Requirements:

● Plan and teach Musical Theater classes for groups of students ages 11 and up

● Prepare fun weekly lessons that support student engagement, learning and development ● Direct/oversee successful live performances and stage productions throughout the year ● Prepare and clean up the classroom area before/after each class

● Prompt communication with parents/guardians and timely updates on student learning ● Clean background check and medical clearance (Live Scan fingerprint clearance with Department of Justice and FBI is required prior to official start of employment)

● Reliable transportation

● Excellent communication skills; both verbal and written

● Effective classroom management skills

● A strong theater and performance background with a focus in musical theater

● Experience teaching Musical Theater classes (acting/singing/choreography) is strongly preferred!

The position will require availability on weekends.

Essential Job Duties

● Plan and execute 12-week children/tween acting classes on Saturday mornings

● Submit all required hours and/or paperwork to the education department head in a timely and organized manner

● Participate in and complete teacher onboarding and orientation

● Maintain a professional relationship with all colleagues and students

● Create an atmosphere conducive for safe learning

● Present a positive role model for students that supports the mission and values of George Street Playhouse

● Be prepared to offer modifications to exercises as needed based on individuals student abilities

● Share written preparation of lesson progressions upon request

● Prepare lessons that reflect consideration for individual student differences

Non Essential Job Duties / Other Duties

● The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.

● Occasional set-up and take-down of chairs, boxes, tables, materials up to 20 lbs ● The ability to observe details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).

Requirements:

● Clear philosophy on theater and performance with a focus in musical theater

● Strong sense of professionalism

● Excellent written and verbal communication skills

● Must be able to move equipment up to 20lbs (such as chairs, boxes and tables) ● All candidates are subject to a background check

Preferred Qualifications

● Degree in a performing arts discipline, education or other relevant area (BA, MFA preferred)

● A strong theater and performance background with a focus in musical theater

● Experience teaching Musical Theater classes (acting/singing/choreography) is strongly preferred!

● Experience teaching children of all ages and skill level

● Experience creating and administering curriculum for a 12 -week course
