Following a local insurrection, during which the Governor is murdered, his wife flees the flaming city, not forgetting to take her finest gowns with her, but in her haste abandons her infant son. Grusha, a kitchen maid, is left with the forsaken child and, strapping him to her back, she sets out on a grueling and perilous journey on foot in search of food and shelter for him. Several years later, peace has been restored to the land and Grusha is married. She is summoned to the capital to stand trial, where she faces the child's biological mother who has been searching for him for some time...
