The wars of the Roses have raged for many years. Now the civil war has finally ended and Edward has been crowned King. His brother, Richard Duke of Gloucester, a soldier all his life, is confronted with "the weak piping time of peace". Robbed of purpose in peacetime, he decides to aim for the crown. He sets his two brothers, George Duke of Clarence, and King Edward. who is already close to death, against each other. Both love Richard dearly and suspect nothing. In need of an upstanding wife of means to be his Queen, he woos and wins Lady Anne, despite having killed both her husband and father-in-law in the wars.
The Queen and her relations Lord Rivers and Lord Grey are mocked by Richard and Lord Buckingham for their opportunism and law birth. Clarence is murdered in the tower in Richard's orders. King Edward's dying attempts at reconciling his Queen 's
Kindred with Richard prove superficial. Edward's son and heir, the young prince, is welcomed home by the court, and immediately sent to the tower with his younger brother to await coronation. Their mother's kinfolk (Rivers and Grey) are killed;
So is Hastings, the Lord Chamberlain, when it is clear he does not favour Richard's accession.
Buckingham proves Richard's chief advisor and henchman, helping to manipulate public opinion and gain him the crown. But when asked to ensure the murder of the princes in the Tower, Buckingham hesitates, looses favour, and escapes to join Richmond who is leading an army from France against Richard. Queen Elizabeth and the Duchess of York (Richard's mother) unite in mourning their dead, and in cursing Richard. When they confront him, he dismisses his mother's curses. Having willed the death of his wife, Anne, Richard needs to marry Elizabeth's daughter to prevent his rival, Richmond, marrying her and thereby strengthening his claim to the throne. Queen Elizabeth is finally persuaded. Buckingham is captured and executed. Richard and Richmond fight for the throne.
