Born in Argentina of Russian and French parentage, and now living in Switzerland, Sol Gabetta is an artist who has surmounted her initial challenges and arrived at the peak of her profession. Since winning her first competition at the age of ten, she has gone on to win special prizes at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow and the ARD competition in Munich – to mention just two examples. At the age of 23 she gained acclaim at the Lucerne Festival with the Vienna Philharmonic under Valery Gergiev, and has not looked back since. Today, she performs with the most acclaimed orchestras on a Guadagnini cello made in 1759, and can be heard on her latest recordings accompanied by pianist Hélène Grimaud and with the Munich Philharmonic conducted by Lorin Maazel. She has also established her own festival in Switzerland, which regularly welcomes the Basel Chamber Orchestra, an ensemble formed in 1984 and which continues the musical tradition hallmarked by Paul Sacher.
In addition to Sol Gabetta, the orchestra has worked with world-renowned soloists including Julia Fischer, Thomas Zehetmair, Emmanuel Pahud, Matthias Goerne, Magdalena Kožená, Cecilia Bartoli, Andreas Scholl and Giuliano Carmignola. Its regular guest conductors include Paul McCreesh, Christopher Hogwood and Giovanni Antonini, with whom it has made award-winning recordings of Beethoven’s complete symphonies. The latter conductor is also founder and leader of the Italian Baroque ensemble Il Giardino Armonico, known for its famous – and sometimes controversial – recordings and dramatic, energetic interpretations. A concert programme to be performed under Antonini’s baton – which includes the overture to Beethoven‘s ballet The Creatures of Prometheus and two lyrical symphonic works by Schumann – thus promises to be a particularly exciting experience.
