  3. J. S. Bach: St Matthew Passion

“I draw the line at Mozart’s death,” says Ton Koopman, one of the outstanding representatives of the historically informed performance movement that blossomed in the 1970s and 1980s. Unlike his contemporaries, he has never given in to the temptation to perform music after Mozart. He has devoted his life to Bach, and there can be scarcely anyone alive today who knows more about the music of the Baroque master. As a conductor, harpsichordist and organist, he has made recordings of Bach’s complete cantatas, oratorios and organ works, while also embarking on a project to record the complete works of Bach’s predecessor Dieterich Buxtehude. Koopman celebrates his 70th birthday in 2014, so it is no exaggeration to say that he has spent half his life in the company of his ensemble the Amsterdam Baroque, founded in 1979. In addition, he naturally accepts invitations to perform with numerous other orchestras – including, for example, a three-year stint as artist-in-residence with the Cleveland Orchestra in 2011–2013.
Koopman has recorded the St Matthew Passion on several occasions with the Amsterdam Baroque Orchestra & Choir, and this Budapest performance of one of the masterpieces of European music promises to be among the outstanding events of the season. The presentation of an oratorical work depends in no small degree on the quality of the solo singers, but we can rest assured that they, too, belong to the very vanguard. The part of the Evangelist who guides us through the story, for example, will be sung by Tilman Lichdi, whose delivery at his debut in Chicago was likened to the perfection of Peter Schreier, and who has already held the Müpa audience spellbound in the same role under the baton of Frieder Bernius in March 2013.
