A thirst for musical adventure, unusual combinations of works and bold innovation are the hallmarks of the Pannon Philharmonic, the symphony orchestra of the city of Pécs, which is alone among provincial Hungarian orchestras in having its own season ticket concert series at the Palace of Arts for ten years now. On this occasion, the ensemble joins forces with Hungary’s internationally renowned Amadinda Percussion Group to present the latest work of an uncommonly talented young composer. Born in 1975, Levente Gyöngyösi is perhaps one of the most performed composers around today, a man whose choral works are sung by thousands in Hungary and around the world, while his symphonic works are played – and commissioned – by leading orchestras. The concerto to be heard here was commissioned by Amadinda, led by Zoltán Rácz, adding Gyöngyösi’s name to the list of those who have written for the ensemble, from John Cage to György Ligeti to Zoltán Jeney.
The Pannon Philharmonic is led by Tibor Bogányi, its principal conductor since autumn 2011. Born into a family of musicians (his brother is the pianist Gergely Bogányi), he established his reputation in Finland, and is widely acknowledged among both professionals and the public as an excellent conductor. For the second half of this concert, he has chosen to present The Rite of Spring, one of the most scandalous works in the history of music. At the 1913 première of the ballet, whose scenes evoke the rituals of pagan Russia, fighting broke out between supporters and opponents of Stravinsky in the audience. The score of the work is now compulsory reading for any conductor, while remaining a true measure of ensemble playing for the orchestra and an experience of elemental power for the audience.
