The gigantic operatic saga of Der Ring des Nibelungen begins in the cool depths of the Rhine with the frolicking of the three water nymphs who guard the river’s treasure, watched in frustration and yearning by the Nibelung dwarf Alberich. Embittered, the piteously ugly and clumsily swimming creature proves to be an easy victim for the desire to rule the world and, loudly cursing love, he steals the Rhine’s gold.
Martin Winkler first sang the role of Alberich in Bayreuth in the summer of 2013, having made an earlier Wagnerian appearance in Stuttgart in the same year as Klingsor in Parsifal. The role of another immortal, Wotan, is brought to life by Egils Silins, whose extraordinary bass-baritone has conquered stages in Frankfurt, Basel and Vienna – and all over Europe beyond that. In the role of Loge, tenor Christian Franz is already a familiar face at the Wagner in Budapest Festival, while the production’s Fricka is sung by Hungary’s own Judit Németh, proclaimed in the international press as one of the greatest stars of the current Wagnerian firmament.
