The Kumu Kahua Theatre annual Kala-Bash Fundraiser and Silent Auction will be held tonight, July 7, 2012 from 5pm-9pm at 46 Merchant Street, in the theatre and on the lanai and courtyard. Not just a fundraiser, this is a celebration of the health of Kumu Kahua Theatre and its downtown neighborhood in Honolulu. After facing a rough financial climate for the last two years, Kumu Kahua Theatre will end this year modestly in the black.

“We’ve made some tough cuts and continue to seek both familiar and new funding sources.” says Managing Director, Donna Blanchard. “There are times for asking for help to support our mission and times for celebrating our livelihood. This is a rare occasion to invite people into our home to do both.”

For several years the Kala-Bash was held at various venues around the city. Six years ago, it was decided by Board of Directors members that it would behoove both the organization and surrounding businesses and neighbors if the event were held in and around the theater itself. When the event was moved to the theater at 46 Merchant Street, it became even more successful and attendance has risen steadily each year.

In addition to the food, beverage, entertainment and silent auction, guided architectural tours of the area will be offered throughout the evening.

“There is a lot of life in Downtown Honolulu on the weekends” says Jason Kanda, Kala-Bash Board President. “This event brings in some people who haven’t visited our theatre or neighborhood before – by holding it here, we not only introduce people to our physical theater, easy access to parking at Harbor Court and beautiful, safe and friendly surroundings, we also introduce them to the ease and safety of visiting the neighborhood, including Chinatown and Aloha Tower on the weekend.”

Participating restaurants and companies include: Brasserie Du Vin, The Chart House, Ige’s Restaurant and 19th Puka, Murphy’s Bar & Grill, Side Street Inn, Alaskan Air, Tiffany and Co., Dukes Waikiki, Kahala Hotel and Resort and Paul Brown Salon and Spa.

Kumu Kahua Theatre, a Hawai’i-based non-profit organization, is the only theatre in the islands dedicated to producing plays written by local playwrights and about local culture. Over the past 41 years, its artists have entertained and educated more than 73,000 people, and produced more than 200 plays.

Tickets are $40 and are limited. Contact the box office to purchase at 536-4441 or in person Monday-Friday, 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM at 46 Merchant Street. Visit kumukahua.org for more information.
