KOI, LIKE THE FISH Opens Tonight at Kumu Kahua Theatre

The world premiere of Koi, Like the Fish by Keali'iwahine Hokoana opens at Kumu Kahua Theatre tonight, May 29, 2014.

A young woman, her husband and child move in to her ailing uncle?s house to take care of him. But Koi, used to living alone, soon begins to clash with his new housemates in spite of their assistance. Tensions rise, and soon Koi's only real friend turns out to be the woman who delivers the mail. Originally produced on Maui in 2008, this play takes an unflinchingly realistic look at the problems of families living together.

KEALI'IWAHINE HOKOANA has also written If You Love Me, H?pai, The Legend of Kaulul'au, and most recently, with T. Ilihia, Da No Car Garage. She is currently in the process of writing a web series called "My Maui Lei. Keali'iwahine says, "I wrote Koi, Like the Fish in shades of gray because life is never black and white."

"The humanity of the characters is what brought me to this play," says director Wil K'hele. "We've all experienced what these characters go through and I think this lets us all know we're not alone."

The show is directed by Wil K'hele, Kumu Kahua Theatre Office Manager, actor (Flowers of Hawai'i, One Comedy of Erras, The Great Kaua?i Train Robbery, and The Hilo Massacre) and director (K'mau A'e, M'ui the Demigod), and Justin Fragiao, who is also a Kumu Kahua Theatre actor (The Great Kaua?i Train Robbery, Cane Fields Burning and Fishing For Wives), set designer (K'mau A'e and Saturday Night at the Pahala Theatre) and former Technical Director.
