ROALD DAHL’S MATILDA THE MUSICAL
Based on the book by Roald Dahl
Book for the musical by Dennis Kelly
Music and lyrics by Tim Minchin
Directed by Abe Reybold
Musical Direction by Allen Robertson
1st Rehearsal 3/5/19, Runs 4/3/19-5/12/19

NOTE: All young performers for this production will be cast locally from ZACH’s education programs.

Principal Roles:

MISS TRUNCHBULL (Male, 30-40): Headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Miss Honey's Aunt. Once a famous athlete, she is described as a gigantic Holy terror, a fierce tyrannical monster who marches like a storm trooper with long arms swinging with an aura of menace. High baritone with a strong F sharp.

MISS HONEY (Female, 25-35): A mild, quiet person who never raises her voice and seldom seems to smile - yet possesses the rare gift of being adored by every small child under her care. She should have a curious warmth that is almost tangible. Soprano up to Bb, with a strong and solid belt up to D.

MR WORMWOOD (Male, 35-40): A dealer in second-hand cars - a mean crooked crook - with a penchant for wearing jackets with large, brightly coloured checks. Should ideally be a clown and could have an ex-punkish rocker voice.

MRS WORMWOOD (Female, 30s): Mother of Michael and Matilda, and the wife of Mr Wormwood. She is obsessed with her amateur Ballroom dancing partner and her looks. Like her husband she thinks very little of Matilda’s unique abilities and often berates her. She is as loud in her makeup and dress sense as she is in her voice – must have strong comedy. Really strong belt voice.

MRS PHELPS (Female, 30-50): Warm and nurturing local librarian who encourages Matilda’s love of reading. She has an inner peace.

Music and lyrics by Steven Trask
Directed by Dave Steakley
1st Rehearsal 7/2/19, Runs 7/31/19-9/8/19

Principal Roles:

HEDWIG (Male): East German rock singer and front woman of The Angry Inch; formerly Hansel, a slip of a girly boy who grew up in communist East Berlin, fell in love with an American GI; became Hedwig and underwent a botched sex change operation in order to marry and move to the states; glamorous, charismatic and always commanding even when at her most bitchy or vulnerable; has had high highs and low lows; very strong rock tenor (high to B4); must have a convincing East German accent; actor must be able to dexterously shift from persona to persona (Hedwig's mother, husband, rock icon ex-lover, Tommy Gnosis); actor should have terrific physical stamina.

YITZHAK (Female): Hedwig's Croatian male husband and roadie/back-up singer; he is Hedwig's vocal sparring partner; theirs is an emotional and at times abusive relationship; the actress playing Yitzhak should be believable as a butch male but one that chafes at the bonds of traditional masculinity and longs to explore his feminine, creative side; very strong singer with rock and roll vibe; wide vocal range a must (High belt to a G); must have a convincing Balkan accent; actress should be able play basic percussion instruments - tambourine; maracas.
