SEEKING

(Only Understudies - ALL ROLES CAST):
Fish: Male, African American, 18-20. Amateur boxer hoping to make a name for himself. Fit. Full of grit, hope and determination. He’s scrappy and smart -- yet with a blissful winning naiveté about him. He could be the future. Actors with boxing experience a plus.
Jay: Male, African American, late 20s - 30s. The Negro Heavyweight Champion. Charismatic and full of swagger. Extremely physically fit; we have to believe he’s a heavyweight boxer. Unwavering and determined. Battles his fierce inner confidence to overcome not only his personal and familial obstacles, but also the intense social prejudices of his time. Actors with boxing experience a plus.
Max: Male, white, 40s – 50s. A fast talkin’ deal makin’ fight promoter and referee. A bit scrappy and salesman, but not in a slick way. While he cares for JAY (more than JAY really realizes), he cares equally about his pocketbook and a profit. Especially seeking a good sense of rhythm as it relates to both text and physical movement.
Nina: Female, African American, 30s. JAY’s older sister. Fierce. Grounded, levelheaded and practical – she is not naïve to the world around. Cares deeply about those she loves, but never afraid to give a good dose of tough love – especially to keep them safe. Especially seeking a good sense of rhythm as it relates to both text and physical movement.
Wynton: Male, African American, 50s. JAY’s trainer. Salt of the earth. Someone who, himself, was formally fit and a boxer. Wise and full of wisdom – wants to see JAY win but knows the costs that will come with it.
