PREPARATION

Please prepare either a monologue of choice for Steel Magnolias or a vocal selection in the style of the shows for Legally Blonde and Come From Away. Please bring your headshot and resume stapled together.

LEGALLY BLONDE

ELLE WOODS: (early 20s, female identifying) The quintessential California blonde who follows her ex-boyfriend to Harvard Law School and realizes that she has more to offer than just a pretty face and a bubbly personality. Gb2-G5 (Soprano Belt)

PROFESSOR CALLAHAN: (mid - late 40s, male identifying) A pompous and manipulative law professor at Harvard. A2-F#4 (Baritone)

EMMETT FORREST: (mid - late 20s, male identifying) A smart and sensitive law student who takes Elle under his wing. B2-A4 (Tenor)

WARNER HUNTINGTON III: (early - mid 20s, male identifying) A good-looking, but pompous guy who breaks Elle’s heart. Eb3-Ab4 (Tenor)

PAULETTE: (mid 30s, female identifying) A brash and funny hair stylist who is friends with Elle and longs to find a man for herself. A3-A5. (Soprano Belt)

VIVIENNE KENSINGTON: (early - mid 20s, female identifying) A smart and savvy Harvard law student who initially dismisses Elle but grows to be her friend. A3-F5 (Soprano Belt)

BROOKE WYNDHAM: (late 20s-Early 30s, female identifying) An exercise video star who is also a former sorority girl. In top physical condition. A3-G5 (Alto/Soprano)

ENID: (early - mid 20s, female identifying) A mousy, intellectual law student. G3-G5 (Soprano Belt)

MARGOT: (20s, female identifying) A charismatic California sorority girl. Part of the Greek Chorus. G#3-F5 (Soprano Belt)

SERENA: (early 20s, female identifying) A charismatic California sorority girl. Part of the Greek Chorus. G#3-F5 (Soprano Belt)

COME FROM AWAY

BEVERLEY & OTHERS: (30s-50s, any ethnicity) Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). An American Airlines pilot, Beverley has always loved flying, but her world is changed when she hears about coworkers who were killed in the attacks, and when she is confronted by passengers who refuse to fly again. Doubles as ANNETTE, a local teacher at the Gander Academy who assists Beulah and often lapses into fantasies about the newcomers. Excellent singer with a high mix/belt and soprano voice.

BEULAH & OTHERS: (30s – 60s, any ethnicity) Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). Head of the Gander Legion, with a firefighter son, she befriends Hannah, walking to church and praying with her, while overcoming her suspicions of Ali. Quick-witted and open hearted, Beulah loves to share a joke. Excellent singer with an alto/belt with mix voice.

BONNIE & OTHERS: (20s–50s, any ethnicity) Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). A no–nonsense mother of 3, Bonnie is the head of the Gander area SPCA. When she discovers animals are trapped on the planes, she stops at nothing to ensure their safety – but in frustration, she sometimes lashes out at her husband, Doug. Excellent singer with a strong alto/2nd soprano voice.

DIANE & OTHERS: (40s-60s, any ethnicity) Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). Diane is a traditional divorcee from Texas, who is terrified that her son may have been flying at the time of the attacks. When she finds out he is safe, she’s given a new lease on life and discovers a wilder more carefree side of herself. Alto belt and mix/soprano voice

HANNAH & OTHERS: (30s–50s, Black, Indigenous, Asian, Latinx/Hispanic, MENASA. Character is female (cis, trans, or non-binary). The mother of a firefighter in Manhattan, Hannah waits for news about her son and is comforted by Beulah. Soulful belt and mix/soprano voice.

JANICE & OTHERS: (20s, any ethnicity) Character is Female (cis, trans, or non-binary). An eager new local TV reporter, Janice is thrown into the deep end on her first day. Initially naïve about the world, Janice must face the pain and confusion around her. Comedy skills a plus. Excellent characterful belt voice comfortable with mix/soprano.

BOB & OTHERS: (late 20s – 30s, Black) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). A hardened New Yorker, Bob is suspicious of where he’s landed, fearing that someone will take advantage of him – but instead he ends up losing his New York jadedness. Baritone.

CLAUDE & OTHERS: (30s–60s, any ethnicity) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). The gregarious and well-liked Mayor of Gander, Newfoundland, Claude loves his work, the townspeople, and his daily traditions, but he’s never before had to deal with a crisis of this magnitude. Doubles as DERM, mayor of the nearby town of Appleton. Rich, characterful baritone voice.

KEVIN J & OTHERS: (20s-40s, MENASA, Asian, Latinx/Hispanic, Black, Indigenous or any ethnicity) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). Kevin T’s boyfriend and secretary. Sarcastic and unhappy, he wants to leave and get back to the U.S. as soon as possible. Doubles as ALI, an Egyptian passenger. Excellent rich baritenor/tenor 2 voice.

KEVIN T & OTHERS: (20s – mid 50s, any ethnicity) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). The head of an environmental energy company in Los Angeles, Kevin was on vacation with his boyfriend (and secretary, also named Kevin), when they are stranded in Gander. Inspired by the town’s generosity, Kevin searches for greater meaning and ways to give back. Doubles as GARTH, head of the local union representing the bus drivers. Excellent tenor voice.

NICK & OTHERS: (40s–60s, any ethnicity) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). An English oil engineer who is focused on his work, Nick’s life is turned upside down when he falls for another passenger, Diane. Doubles as DOUG, an air traffic controller and husband to Bonnie. Characterful baritenor or tenor voice.

OZ & OTHERS: (20s–50s, any ethnicity) Character is male (cis, trans, or non-binary). The quirky constable in the two–person Gander police force. When the town’s population suddenly doubles, Oz helps out in unexpected ways. Doubles as JOEY, a rambunctious passenger on one of the planes who enjoys a good drink. Excellent pop tenor voice

STEEL MAGNOLIAS

TRUVY JONES: (40s, any ethnicity, female-identifying) Owner and operator of a small-town beauty shop in fictional Chinquapin Parish, Louisiana. Truvy is a big-hearted, frustrated romantic who self describes as being “built for comfort not speed”. She prides herself in giving great advice and knowing everyone’s business, which she lovingly shares with anyone who will listen. NOTE: Actor will need to be comfortable doing hair and nails onstage.

SHELBY EATENTON-LATCHERIE: (early – mid 20s, any ethnicity, female identifying) The prettiest girl in town who refuses to be defined by her compromised health due to Type 1 Diabetes. Rebellious and independent, she longs to create a family of her own, even in the face of her mother’s vehement objections. Strong regional southern accent.

M’LYNN EATENTON: (50s, any ethnicity, female identifying) An accomplished career woman and devoted mother to Shelby. M’Lynn is used to being in charge and frequently clashes with her headstrong daughter. Strong regional southern accent.

ANNELLE DUPUY-DESOTO: (early 20s, any ethnicity, female identifying) New in town and desperately shy, Annelle finds both a job and a new family when she begins work as a hairdresser in Truvy’s salon. Quirky and religious, she comes out of her shell as she bonds with the women at work. NOTE: Actor will need to be comfortable doing hair and nails onstage.

CLAIREE BELCHER: (60s, any ethnicity, female-identifying) Former mayor of Chinquapin. Wealthy and wise- cracking, Clairee knows everyone’s business and often uses her sarcastic humor to lighten the mood. Never afraid to poke loving fun at anyone including and especially her best friend and town crank, Ouiser.

OUISER BOURDEAUX:(60s, any ethnicity, female-identifying) Clairee’s dearest and oldest friend, who has been “in a bad mood for 40 years”. Lovably miserable and brutally frank, Ouiser is often the butt of other people’s jokes, which she takes in sardonic stride.
