BREAKDOWN

This is a revelatory play that begins with death - journeys through grief, heartache and confusion - and ends with unexpected and hilarious consequences.

Its central cast lives in the upper reaches of New Orleans society c.1815. They are Governors, Soldiers, Ladies, Sons, Daughters and Titled Uncles of the rich and powerful. Together with their servants, they are educated, canny, resourceful, passionate, sexy, tough, opinionated and resilient.

They are also inhabitants of the Gulf Coast – a world of piratic cruelty and swash, racial diversity and a blend of Spanish, French, English and American ancestries. It is exotic – quixotic - dangerous and devilish. And…as products of the Romantic Era they live with a natural, ambiguous ‘gender-blended’ appreciation of each other.

This casting process underlines its commitment to racially and gender diverse casting.

Viola - Sebastian's twin sister - Mid-20’s. This role may be played by a male or female. Attractive, smart, funny - deeply felt and romantic: this is the signature character for the plays emotional story. Must look like the actor/actress playing Sebastian. Twins encouraged to apply

Sebastian – Viola's twin brother - Mid-20’s. Must look like the actor/actress playing Viola. Attractive, smart, funny – deeply felt and romantic: he is Viola’s alter. He serves in the military. Twins encouraged to apply.

Orsino – Military Governor of Louisiane - Early 30’s. Byronesque: He is soldier/pirate - sexy, dangerous, potentially violent, narcissistic, highly-educated and potentially sexually ambiguous. Modeled on Jean Lafitte.

Olivia – a Countess. Mid-20’s. Beautiful, refined, highly-educated, strongly passionate, and grief-ridden to begin – she falls in love and becomes a witty, direct, sophisticated yet canny and enthusiastic fool for love.

Malvolio – Steward to Olivia - Over 45. A self-important, narcissistic, judgmental servant who cloaks himself in the sneer of Puritan disapproval to distance himself from those that are his equals – effectively isolated himself in his own fantasy of himself. He is a stiff – mean and duplicitous – and, if this play has a villain, it is he.

Maria – Olivia’s Maid and Confidant - Over 35. She is a canny, big-hearted, funny—and fiercely loyal to Olivia and the integrity of her house. She’s also, perhaps to her own detriment, in love with an alcoholic Sir Toby.

Sir Toby Belch – Olivia’s Uncle - Over 40. He is an aristocrat with alcoholic tendencies who, since the death of his brother (Olivia’s father) spiraled into a protracted binge. When drunk, he is hilarious, outrageous, careless - a malicious trickster with a well-honed edge of rough justice for pretense and cruelty. He would love Maria but doesn’t consider himself worthy of her.

Sir Andrew Aguecheek – Suitor to Olivia, cohort to Sir Toby – Over 35. He is the wayward, dim and weak issue of a fatigued and fading aristocratic tree. He is a happy drunk – but his alcoholism masks his deep insecurity about himself in the world. His dwindling inherited resources, which until now have allowed him to party without working in the world, now demand that he find a marriage of convenience that will continue to support his profligacy.

Feste – Olivia’s Jester and old retainer - Over 50. He was Olivia’s father’s old servant and best friend. Olivia grew up at his knee and he loves her unreservedly. After his master’s death, he has disappeared to deal with his grief – and has now returned to assist Olivia with hers. He is the interlocutor of the play – the Becket-like person who observes to and with the audience as well as participating in the story. He is the first to recognize Viola’s charade. He must be able to accompany himself musically – guitar, banjo, concertina, violin.

Fabian – a under-steward to Malvolio - Late 20’s/30’s. Male or Female actor. A good and righteous boy turned sour by serving under a cruel and dismissive Malvolio. He is an imp in spite of himself – and, at the end of the play, emerges as a logical, if youngish, candidate for Malvolio’s position.

Antonio – a sailor, brigand and 'friend' to Sebastian - Early 30’s. He was among the crew of the ship that Sebastian and Viola were wrecked on. He’s an adventurer and a young tough; over-fond of Sebastian – perhaps because he’s invested in saving his life - perhaps because of his sexual ambiguousness – perhaps both.

Captain of the Wrecked Ship/Olivia’s Priest, Sir Topas/Mardi Gras Reveler - 50’s. This is a character actor who can play a strong sea captain, a marginally dotty priest and ‘local color’ as a Mardi Gras reveler. Playing a musical instrument is a plus…

Officer Valentine/Mardi Gras Reveler - 25 – 45. He is a military adjutant to Orsino and part of the Louisiane’s police governance. He fashions himself after Orsino – is well-groomed and takes his position and his person very seriously. He may double as a Mardi Gras Reveler. Playing a musical instrument a plus….

Officer Curio/Mardi Gras Reveler - 35 – 55. He is also military adjutant to Orsino and part of the Louisiane’s police governance. Although, hopefully, a little older, he too, fashions himself after Orsino – but perhaps in a more avuncular manner. He is still well-groomed and takes his position very seriously. He may double as a Mardi Gras Reveler. Playing a musical instrument a plus….

(3) Sailor/Maids to Olivia/Mardi Gras Revelers - 20’s. These roles are cross-dressed as Sailors in the ship wreck scene – but function primarily as Olivia’s Maids and a Mardi Gras Revelers. Playing a musical instrument a plus...

(4) Sailor/Cadets to Orsino/Mardi Gras Revelers – 20’s. These are Sailors in the ship wreck scene – but function primarily as Cadets attached to Orsino and a Mardi Gras Revelers. Playing a musical instrument a plus….
