THE WIZ is an African-American re-telling of the classic novel The Wizard of Oz. Like the novel and the MGM movie (and UNLIKE the movie version of THE WIZ), the story starts on a farm in Kansas and then transitions to the magical Land of Oz. Dorothy is a young girl who gets caught up in a tornado, meets new friends, inspires them to fulfill their dreams and ultimately returns home with greater strength and maturity. The tone is joyful, funny, witty and heartfelt. The dialogue is at times sassy and knowing but the performances should always be genuine and permeated with a sense of innocence, energy and joy. The songs are a mix of r&b, gospel, soul and pop music. This production will neither play up the 70s ‘camp’/nostalgia factor, nor will it attempt to create a contemporary, hip-hop update of the score. The DTC production will be comprised of a cast of musical theater actor/singers in the principle roles, collaborating with a modern dance company – Dallas Black Dance Theatre – who will embody – through dance- the physical world of the play (the tornado, yellow brick road, poppies, winged monkeys, etc.)
Seeking the following role:
Tinman:
Late 20s-40s; – is made of tin and thinks he lacks heart, though he actually is the most caring and compassionate one of all. He has a slightly ‘dry’ or smart-aleck sense of humor at times. He’s a man, not a boy – but he is out-going, friendly and joyful. Strong singer – sings two contrasting solos (one witty, pop/vaudeville song & one moving, soulful ballad); Vocal range is open to interpretation – this role must sing with great style and flexibility.
