Seeking:

Annie Sullivan:

Late 20s - early 30s. Irish American of impoverished means; haunted by her past. Nearly blind herself. Fiercely intelligent, feisty, a survivor. Tenacious, relentless, persistent. Is unafraid to fight for what she needs in order to teach her pupil. Compassionate, selfless, but knows what it takes to be disadvantaged in the extreme and survive in life. Capable of tenderness, but very guarded. Ironic sense of humor.

Captain Keller:

40s. Southerner; military background; soft heart masked by gruff exterior and sense of masculine propriety. Loves his daughter but is at a loss as to know how to help her; finds the challenge of living with her in the household vexing in the extreme. Has difficulty expressing affection; much tension between him and his son James. Intelligent and vigorous.

Kate Keller:

Early - mid 30s. Keller's second, and somewhat younger wife. Southern; a steel magnolia. Gentle exterior, fierce interior. Loves her daughter, is fiercely protective of her and fiercely interested in her well-being and best interests. Relentless in her pursuit of solutions. Compassionate and loving; plenty of Southern manners and charm; capable of manipulation, a real fighter underneath.

James Keller:

Early - mid- 20s. Keller's son by his first marriage. Cynical/sarcastic surface masks his injured heart. Can be flippant and can seem to be cruel and thoughtless. Biting sense of humor. Ultimately compassionate and caring, but trapped in his present circumstances.

Viney:

Early 30s - early 40s. African-American servant in the Keller household. Strong, hard-working, speaks her mind. Champion of tough love. Compassionate towards but vexed by Helen. May double in another, smaller role.
