THE MAKING OF A KING is Henry IV Parts I & II and Henry V in rotating rep.
An epic coming-of-age tale that follows the education of young Prince Hal from his unpromising start in bawdy houses and taverns under the tutelage of the larger-than-life Sir John Falstaff to his rise as one of England’s greatest monarchs, King Henry the Fifth. Travel from palaces to battlefields, from civil war in Britain to battles in the vasty fields of France. Michael Winters (Gilmore Girls) will be playing Falstaff.
Seeking two strong, dynamic actors with strong classical theatre acting experience and text skills. Directors are interested in seeing actors of ALL ETHNICITIES:
Actor 1:
to play Hal / Henry V:
- Hal: (Mid 20s – Early 30s) He is youthful, charismatic, buoyant and debauched. A terrific athlete. In great physical shape. Keen and witty, if not always serious. Spends his time drinking in taverns and playing practical jokes. The fallen golden child, underestimated by all around him, but never a joke himself. A playboy with unrecognized depth and inherent status. Truly loves Falstaff and the fellowship and camaraderie of the Tavern and his friends there.
- Henry V: (Mid 20s – Early 30s): A new king who is still learning the job, capable of mistakes and prone to impulse. A natural leader, though a diamond in the rough with a lot to prove. Not perfect, with plenty of flaws to go with his heroism, but capable of capturing the imaginations and hearts of an entire nation. Increasingly alone, lonely and isolated, but never deaf to the needs of his people. Never lacks awareness of the cost of the war he’s chosen. Role requires combat (sword and shield, hand-to-hand, et al).
Actor 2:
to play Hotspur /Silence/ Fluellen:
- Hotspur: (Late 20s – Mid to late 30s) A bull in a china shop. Explosive, passionate, fiery, and unrefined. Deeply principled, though not political; a man of war. Impulsive, lacks self-control, and is vulnerable to manipulation. Sexy, rough, and gritty; an uncontrollable force. Commands attention and respect with great ease. A terrific athlete. Role requires combat (sword and shield, hand-to-hand, et al).
- Silence: (Late 20s-Mide-late 30s): An ancient, quiet and easy-to-miss main-stay of the tavern. He has drunk his way into near oblivion and lived at least several lives
- Fluellen: (Late 20s – Mid to late 30s) Career soldier. Superb warrior. Student of warfare. Welsh (actor must have a very good accent). Huge heart to go with his blustery disposition. Capable of carrying a grudge. He is funny without knowing that he is. Actor must have a very good Welsh accent.
