BREAKDOWN

NOTE: We are seeking to create an ethnically diverse cast. Dialect TBD, either British or Mid-Atlantic

JOHN (JACK/ERNEST) WORTHING:
Male-identifying, 28-35, any ethnicity. Jack leads a double life, though on the surface he seems responsible and upstanding. He is in love with Algernon’s cousin, Gwendolen Fairfax. Is the guardian of Cecily Cardew. Witty, good with language.

ALGERNON MONCRIEFF:
Male-identifying, 28-35, any ethnicity. Charming yet idle bachelor. He’s the nephew of Lady Bracknell, cousin of Gwendolen Fairfax, and best friend of Jack Worthing. In addition to being brilliantly smart and witty, he is also selfish and unscrupulous. He has invented Bunbury, a made-up sick friend who’s unstable medical condition allows Algernon to escape unwanted social plans.

GWENDOLEN FAIRFAX:
Female-identifying, 25-30, any ethnicity. Algernon’s cousin and Lady Bracknell’s daughter. Gwendolen is in love with Jack, whom she knows as Ernest. An authority of society and high fashion, she speaks confidently on matters of taste, which often manifests as judgement. Smart, Sophisticated, cultured, and pretentious.

CECILY CARDEW:
Female-identifying, 18-22, any ethnicity. Jack’s ward. She falls in love with Algernon (who she things is Jack’s brother Ernest) based on the idea that he is wicked. She has created an elaborate romance with him in her head, included an engagement. Naive, hopeful and young in every sense of the word.

LADY BRACKNELL:
Female-identifying, 50s, any ethnicity. Algernon’s aunt and Algernon’s mother. Snobby, domineering, and biting. Unintentionally humorous. She is a narrow-minded, shrewd, and an authoritarian. Takes up space when she enters a room and makes sure she is seen and heard.

MISS PRISM:
Female-identifying, 50-65, any ethnicity. Cecily’s governess. Highly educated, puritanical, classist, strict. Despite that, she entertains romantic feelings for Dr. Chasuble.

REV. CANON CHASUBLE:
Male-identifying, 45-60, any ethnicity. The rector on Jack’s estate who frequently visits to see Miss Prism and despite being celibate, entertains romantic feelings for her.
