BREAKDOWN

THE IMAGINARY INVALID

General Note: All actors must be strong physical comedians with great language skills

SEEKING:

ARGAN: (CAST: Bill Irwin) (50s-60s) A wealthy hypochondriac who is obsessively preoccupied with his health and easily manipulated by those around him.

TOINETTE: (30s-40s) The family's sharp-witted maid. Clever, outspoken, and savvy. She has way more agency than even Argan and is very happy with her position. A tempest in a teacup who can quickly go from brash and brassy to demure when necessary. Acts as a pleasant obstacle for Argan but has a genuine and deep loyalty for Argan and Angelique.

BELINE: (40s-50s) Argan’s second wife. Polished, calculating, and duplicitous. Though she appears devoted to the family, she is hoping for Argan's passing so that she can acquire her inheritance.

ANGELIQUE: (20s-Early 30s) Argan's daughter. Innocent, sincere, with a zest for life. She has a doting affection for her father. Will do what is expected of her without any push back but has found her true love in Cleante which is revelatory and wants to embrace her future with him. Seeking a strong singer for a featured musical section in the play.

BONNEFOY/PURGON/THOMAS: (30s-Early 40s) BONNEFOY - Handsome notary who arrives to help Argan with his will. Has a great vaudevillian double talk style interaction in the process. Will double as PURGON - Argan’s primary doctor. Authoritative, sharp, and extreme in his diagnoses and THOMAS DIAFOIRUS - A recently graduated physician and Angelique’s prospective match. Intense, socially awkward, and unsettlingly earnest.

DOCTOR DIAFOIRUS/FLEURANT: (50s-60s) DOCTOR DIAFOIRUS A proud, old-school physician and father to Thomas. Formal, verbose, and deeply committed to the rules of his profession. Will double as FLEURANT - Argan’s apothecary. Efficient, transactional, and entirely comfortable profiting from Argan’s anxieties.

BERALDE: (60s–70s) Argan’s brother. Calm, rational, and compassionate, he challenges Argan’s obsession with medicine and advocates for Angelique.

CLEANTE: (20s-Early 30s) Angelique’s love interest. Innocent, doting and affectionate. He disguises himself and schemes to win her hand. Seeking a strong singer for a featured musical section in the play.
